Arkansas Gambling

Arkansan Gambling Information

Like most southern states in the United States, Arkansas has only limited legalized gambling and the games are targeted to certain niches. Most Arkansans view casino gambling as dangerous or immoral, which racetrack gambling and bingo are considered less morally gray.

Arkansas has 1 dog track and 1 horse track. The legal gambling age is 18 years old. Nobody 18 of age or younger is allowed to gamble at the horse or dog tracks.

Also, there is no lottery in Arkansas.

Arkanas Dog Racing

Arkansas has legalized dog track racing. The only pari-mutuel dog track in Arkansas is in West Memphis, Arkansas at the Southland Park Racetrack. Here is the info for Southland Park. Dog betting is considered a game of skill, as opposed to games of chance like poker, blackjack and other casino games.

Horse Racing in Arkansas

Arkansas has legalized horse racing. There is only one horsetrack in Arkansas at present, at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Arkansas Casino Gambling

Arkansas governor Mike Beebe is against legalized gambling, despite public campaigns to bring casino gambling to the state. One of the chief advocates of casino gamblign in Arkansas is the United Keetoowan Band, a Cherokee tribe which is based mainly in Oklahoma. The Keetoowah band wants to bring a casino to Fort Smith, Arkansas. The native Americans believe they can employ 1,300 full time employees in a riverfront casino property. Interestingly, the Eastern Oklahoma Bureau of Indian Affairs office opposes the proposed casino, presumably because a casino would hurt business in eastern Oklahoma. Governor Beebe has left the door open to support gambling, if the voters of Arkansas amend their constitution.

Arkansas has no state lottery and lottery gaming is not legal in the state. Arkansan gaming interests are currently trying to pass pro-lottery laws. Arkansas Lieutenant Governor Bill Halter is the most visible advocate of legalized lottery gaming. Halter claims a lotto would be used to fund college scholarships in the state.

The Arkansas State Lottery would deposit revenues into a trust fund which would be used to create both 2-year and 4-year scholarships. Anti-gambling activists will oppose Bill Halter's legislation.
