Tonga Gambling

Tongan Gambling Laws

There are no casinos in Tonga or any other form of organized gambling. While the specific reasons are unknown, it may be due to the strong sense of religion on the island (primarily Mormons and Christians) and their isolation.

Information About Tonga

Located south of Samoa and east of Fiji, Tonga is the only archipelago in the Pacific Ocean to have never been colonized. It is also the only remaining monarchy of the island nations in the Pacific. Tonga has more PhDs per capita than any other country in the world.

Tonga and its surrounding islands are also known as the Friendly Islands. This name was given by Captain Cook after he received a particularly warm welcome upon first visiting the nation. The chiefs actually wanted to murder him, but they couldn’t agree on what to do.

The country is divided into four divisions. They are:

- Eua
- Ha’apai
- Niuas
- Tongatapu
- Vava’u

Shops and businesses in Tonga are usually open Monday through Friday from 8:30am until 4:30pm and Saturday from 8:30am until 12:30pm. From midnight Saturday until midnight Sunday, all entertainment and commerce halts to honor the Sabbath.

The nation’s economy relies on remittances from Tongan citizens living abroad, especially in the United States, New Zealand and Australia. Handicrafts are the leading product of the manufacturing sector, but they only account for 3% of the GDP. Rural citizens grow vanilla beans, coconuts, bananas, yams and cassava. The major livestock consists of pigs and chickens.

The government is working hard to increase tourism, as they believe it could provide a major boost for the economy. Cruise ships now make stops in Vava’u and Nuku’alofa, and many visitors enjoy whale watching, fishing, surfing and relaxing on Tonga’s many beaches. Tourists should note that appearing in public without a shirt is a punishable offense for both men and women.

Tonga’s population is estimated to be 112,422. Of this number, almost two-thirds live on the main island of Tongatapu. Most Tongans are Methodists, but Mormons also claim 32 percent of the population (reportedly making Tonga the most Mormon nation in the world).

Tongan and English are the official dialects of the nation. Tongan is closely related to other Polynesian languages such as Hawaiian.

Rugby union is the national sport of Tonga. The national team has competed in four Rugby World Cups, and 2007 was their most successful year in the tournament. They have automatically been qualified for entry into the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
