Tajikistani Gambling Laws
There is no legal gambling in Tajikistan. This is primarily due to the nation following the teachings of Islam. The Tajik or Tajikistani people are 99% Muslim, whatever their ethnic background might be.
Tajikistan is located in Central Asia. Landlocked, it is bordered by Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and China. A former Soviet Republic, Tajikistan declared its independence after the fall of the Soviet Union. It then became embroiled in a civil war which lasted from 1992 until 1997.
During this time, factions backed by Russia and Iran fought for control of the country. Most of the 400,000 ethnic Russians employed in the industrial sector fled to Russia. With the help of the Russian military, the people of the Leninabadi region maintained power in Tajikistan.
The Leninabadi were the ruling class during the Soviet era, and their leader was Emomali Rahmonov, who later changed his last name to the less Russian-sounding Ramhon. The war ceased in 1997, and the first elections were held in 1999.
However, many believe the election process to be corrupt. Current President Emomali Rahmon was re-elected in 2006, and there is speculation that he has secured his office until 2020. In the 2006 elections, many mainline opposition parties boycotted the elections.
Cotton and aluminum are important to the economy of the country, as are foreign aid and remittances from migrant workers. The major illegal source of income is drug trafficking, with Tajikistan ranking third in the world for heroin and raw opium confiscations.
The population of the country was estimated to be 7,320,716 in 2006. The primary ethnic group is the Tajiks, although many Uzbeks and Russians can be found.
The official language is Tajik, and it is used in everyday life. Russian is spoken during government and business functions.
Sunni Islam is the dominant religion, although many Shi’a also live in the country. Bukharian Jews have been present in the country since 2nd century BC, but only a few hundred now remain.
