Surinamese Gambling Laws

Gambling is legal in Suriname and there are four sizable casino operations in the capital. Suriname is a former colony of the Netherlands, which maintains many economic ties to that country. Suriname is found on the northeastern coast of South America.

Suriname has tried to lure foreign casino investors into their country in the past with liberal gaming laws, though later Surinamese adminstrations were stricter in their enforcement of old laws. For example, a casino crisis loomed in 2004, when the -- administration threatened to evict all casino operations from Suriname.

During the Wijdenbosch administration between 1996 and 2000, Surinamese officials allowed a number of foreign casinos interests into the country. After President Ronald Venetiaan took over in 2000, the Venetiaan government tried to rehabilitate Suriname's international image.

Wijdenbosch was an official in the infamous Bouterse government of the 1980's which killed political opponents in nighttime raids and was accused by the government of the Netherlands and other western nations of drug trafficking.

Surinamese Casino Law Enforcement

Surinamese officials in 2004 gave casinos six months to come in line with Suriname law, which required license holders to have a casino within an established casino site and hotel. Those that did not would be expelled from the country. Only the president could choose to extend the time period, dependant on casinos showing they had a plan to comply with the laws within a year's time.

Casinos in Suriname provide about 2,000 steady jobs. While most casinos were built using foreign capital and the management is foreign as well, most of the staff is made up of local Surinamese.

The crisis passed and Suriname continues to operate four casinos, all in the capital city of Paramaribo. Suriname Palace Casino closed down in 2005, perhaps as a result of the new Surinamese enforcement procedures.

Once, a gambling house named Suriname Palace Casino was found in Paramaribo, but this casino closed in early 2005.

Lottery and Wagering Solutions Leaves Suriname

Lottery & Wagering Solutions, a foreign firm involved in the Surinamese gambling industry, closed for business in early 2005. A court ruling against L&WS led to their evicted from the hotel in which their casino operation was housed. That hotel was the Plaza Hotel.

After losing an appeal in a Surinamese court and failing to find a suitable alternate hotel for their casino, Lottery and Wagering Solutions decided to close their business altogether.

Lottery & Wagering also had casino operations in the Grand Tulip Hotel in Surinam, but sold those in 2005 for the sum of $500,000.
