Somalian Gambling Information

Gambling is not legal in Somalia. This is due to the majority of the country adhering to the teachings of Islam. Somalis abstain from gambling, alcohol, pork and paying or receiving any form of interest.

Facts About Somalia

Somalia is located in East Africa and bordered by Kenya, Djibouti and Ethiopia. The capital of the country is Mogadishu. The population of the country is estimated to be around 10,700,000.

In 1960, Italian Somaliland gained its independence from Italy. Earlier that same year, British Somaliland also gained its independence. The two newly-independent countries joined together to form the Somali republic.

In 2006, a conflict broke out between a group of Mogadishu warlords known as the Alliance for the Restoration of Peace and Counter-Terrorism and a militia supported by the Islamic Courts Union. Islamic forces wanted to change social laws, banning such things as watching movies or soccer in public.

Hundreds of people died in the conflict, and many described it as the worst fighting the country had seen in decades. In 2006, Islamic forces from within Somalia also declared war on Ethiopia. Days of fighting followed, and the Islamic fighters were forced to abandon the capital of Mogadishu on December 28, 2006.

Soldiers from Ethiopia and the Somali government pressed the attack and next fought the Battle of Ras Kamboni. Islamic forced were driven from their strongholds and forced into the forests and hills. The United States intervened and sent gunships to the aid of government forces in January of 2007.

Since 1991, the country has had no effective national government. The Transitional Federal Government controls parts of Southern Somalia, but many Somalis do not recognize their authority.

Western citizens have been a target for violence in Somalia. A western nurse was shot and killed in September of 2006, and two aid workers were kidnapped in May of 2007.

The main language of the country is Somali, and it is spoken by almost every citizen. Numerous minority languages exist throughout various regions of the country, while Arabic is also prevalent due to religious reasons. English and Italian can also be found.

The vast majority of Somalis are Sunni Muslims. Their constitution discourages any religion other than Islam.
