San Marino Gambling
San Marinese Gambling Laws
Currently, there is no gambling in San Marino. In the past, however, it did exist. In 1949, when the elected Communist government ruled San Marino, they found the country’s coffers running low. They opened a casino in an effort to generate additional revenue, but protests eventually caused it to close.
In 1980, another attempt was made to bring casinos to San Marino. It failed without a casino ever being opened.
San Marino belongs to a customs union with their Italian neighbors. As part of the union, San Marino pays duties on any items which pass through Italy in order to reach San Marino. Italy is also allowed to preserve monopolies on tobacco and other goods, and San Marino is prohibited from opening gambling houses. In return, San Marino receives a yearly subsidy termed the Canone Doganale.
