In 1949, when the elected Communist government ruled San Marino, they found the country’s coffers running low. They opened a casino in an effort to generate additional revenue, but protests eventually caused it to close. In 1980, another attempt was made to bring casinos to San Marino. It failed without a casino ever being opened. San Marino belongs to a customs union with their Italian neighbors. As part of the union, San Marino pays duties on any items which pass through Italy in order to reach San Marino. Italy is also allowed to preserve monopolies on tobacco and other goods, and San Marino is prohibited from opening gambling houses. In return, San Marino receives a yearly subsidy termed the Canone Doganale. San Marino FactsThe Most Serene Republic of San Marino is located in the Apennine Mountains and surrounded by Italy. Considered one of the European Microstates, it has the smallest population of any member of the Council of Europe. The country maintains that it is the oldest constitutional republic in the world, having been founded in 301 by Marinus of Rab. The constitution, written in 1600, is the oldest written constitution which is still in effect. While not a member of the European Union, San Marino joined the Council of Europe in 1988 and the United Nations in 1992. San Marino is divided into nine municipalities. Each municipality is comprised of a different town. They are: - The City of San Marino (the capital of the country) The official currency is the euro, and San Marino also places their own designs on the national side of the euro coins. Postage stamps are produced within the country and act as an additional source of revenue. In 1997, over 3.3 million tourists visited San Marino. Today, tourism accounts for over half of the country’s GDP. Banking, ceramics, wine, cheese and electronics also play a large role. The population of San Marino is estimated to be 29,000. The primary language is Italian, and the Roman Catholic religion is the most popular. Football (soccer) is highly popular in San Marino, and the country also has a successful pro baseball team. |
