Rwandan Gambling

There is no evidence of any kind of legal gambling in Rwanda. No casinos are present, and this may indicate a reluctance on the part of investors to place a business in the middle of such a war-ravaged and poor country.

Rwanda Information

Rwanda is a landlocked country in east-central Africa. It is bordered by Burundi, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania. Known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” Rwanda has a population of around 9 million people.

Before January of 2006, Rwanda was divided into 12 provinces. These were abolished and redrawn into the current five provinces, which are:

- North Province
- East Province
- West Province
- South Province
- Kigali Province

Rwanda, unfortunately, is best known for the genocide which took place during April through July in 1994. After two state presidents were killed, the Hutu-led military and various militia groups retaliated by killing an estimated 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and Hutu moderates. Tutsi forces advanced on the capital, and thousands of additional citizens were killed in the fighting.

During the Second Congo War, forces from Rwanda and Uganda tried to conquer parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo. From 1998 until 2002, militias known as Mai Mai appeared across the landscape, having been supplied by arms dealers from China, Russia and the United States. Fighting between the various factions led to 3.8 million casualties (including almost all of the animals in the region).

Being a landlocked country with almost no industry, Rwanda relies primarily on agriculture for its survival. Primary exports include coffee, tea, flowers and minerals. The major markets for these exports are China, Belgium and Germany.

It is estimated that 60% of the country lives below the poverty line. Belgium has worked closely with the government to try to rebuild agricultural practices, and they contribute an estimated 25 to 35 million euros to the nation each year.

Most Rwandan citizens speak Kinyarwanda as their native language.

The majority of the population is made up of ethnic Hutu (84%), while the Tutsi make up around 15%, and the Twa comprise 1%. Belgians, British, Arabs, French and Asians are also present.

Roman Catholicism is the primary religion, with Protestant, Adventist and Muslims beliefs also being represented. Since the 1994 genocide, the Muslim population has greatly increased within the country.
