Gambling in Romania

Romanian Gaming Law Information

By Reno Rollins

Gambling in Romania is legal, from the national lottery to bingo and poker. Casinos were legalized in Romania in 1990, and they have continued to draw a mix of locals and tourists.

Visitors will need their passport in order to enter a casino, and the minimum age for gambling is 18.

Romania actively supports gambling, so it’s no surprise that over 900 companies offer around 23,000 licensed slot machines. These licenses are issued by the Finance Ministry.

Romania underwent a gambling boom in the 90s, and it looks at though the same thing is taking place a decade later. Investors find the country attractive due to the tax code, which introduces a 20 to 25 percent tax in gambling. However, since it’s impossible to calculate the net gain, these taxes usually go uncollected.

Licenses are granted for each slot machine and table game, and these normally last for a period of one year.

Sports Betting in Romania

Sports betting is legal in Romania, and bets can be placed online or at one of the many stands located on street corners throughout Romania. Leisure and Gaming PLC is one example of bookmaking companies which operate in the country.

As of this writing, there are over 20 licensed sports betting companies licensed to do business in Romania.

Poker in Romania

While a Romanian Poker Tour does exist, the number of participants has been somewhat low in recent years. Part of this is due to the fact that no poker rooms exist in the country, this making it harder to establish a solid fan base. Casinos do offer poker, however, so interest in the game slowly continues to grow.
