Facts About Reunion Island

The island of Reunion is located in the Indian Ocean, about 130 miles from the nearest island, Mauritius. It is 39 miles long and 28 miles wide. Reunion has an estimated population of 776,948. The capital is Saint-Denis.

Reunion is considered an overseas department of France and is counted among their 26 regions. It is an outermost region of the European Union, and the first place in the world to adopt the use of the Euro as a currency.

While French is the official language of the island, the most widely spoken is Reunion Creole, a derivative of the French language. Reunion Creole is even taught in some schools.

A citizen of Reunion is called a Réunionnaise.

Throughout 2005 and 2006, Reunion suffered an epidemic of chikungunya, which is an incurable disease spread by mosquitoes. 255,000 people on the island contracted the disease, and it even spread to France and Madagascar vie air travel. Over 200 fatalities were reported on the island as a result of the disease which causes high fever, extreme pain and dehydration. Over 500 French troops were sent to eradicate mosquitoes, and no new cases were reported after the summer of 2006.

When traveling in Reunion, it is recommended that you wear light cotton clothing (preferably white) in the form of trousers and long-sleeved shirts. This will reduce the risk of mosquito bites.
