The national and official language of Mauritania is Hassaniva, which is a dialect of Arabic. Other languages found in the country include: French, Wolof, Soninke and Pulaar. Slavery still exists in Mauritania, with some Arab Muslims owning black slaves. In 2007, slavery in Mauritania was criminalized, and slave ownership has been banned by law since 1981. Some estimates place the number of slaves as high as 600,000, with many serving as bonded labor. |
