Facts About the Maldives Islands
Maldives is an island nation in the Indian Ocean. It consists of 26 atolls and 1,192 islets. Located southwest of Sri Lanka, about 200 of the islets are inhabited. Maldives is the smallest Asian country based on population, and it is also the smallest predominantly Muslim nation in the world.
It also has the unusual distinction of being the flattest country on the planet. The maximum natural ground level has been measured at just 7 Ĺ feet.
Islam was introduced to the islands in 1153. While the islands fell under the control of both the Portuguese and the Dutch, it finally became a British protectorate in 1887. Maldives obtained its independence in 1965.
In December of 2004, the Maldives were hit by a tsunami and suffered catastrophic damage (the tallest waves were 14 feet high). 57 islands suffered serious damage, 14 islands had to be evacuated and six islands were completely destroyed. The total damages were estimated to be over $400 million, and 108 people lost their lives.
Fisheries and tourism make up the backbone of the nationís economy. Manufacturing, banking and shipping are also growing industries.
The official religion of the Maldives is Islam. It is illegal to openly practice any other religion.
As of 2005, the population of the islands was estimated to be 300,000. Of this number, more than 50,000 were employees from countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh.
The official language is Dhivehi, and the modern written script is referred to as Thaana. English, however, is widely used in the business world and in government schools.
