Facts About Macedonia

The Republic of Macedonia (often referred to as simply Macedonia) is a landlocked country in southeastern Europe. It is bordered by Serbia, Albania, Greece and Bulgaria. Like most of the Balkan Peninsula, Macedonia was part of the Ottoman Turk Empire. When the provinces of Turkey-in-Europe gained their independence, the area that became Macedonia was disputed between the Serbian, Bulgarian and Greek states.

After World War I, the Serbs succeeded in forming Yugoslavia. Macedonia was one of Yugoslavia's provinces. The Macedonians peacefully seceded from Yugoslavia in 1991 and were admitted to the United Nations in 1993.

It is also a member of the Council of Europe, La Francophonia, the World Trade Organization and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. Macedonia has also applied for membership to both NATO and the European Union.

Macedonia has an estimated population of over two-million and fifty-five thousand people. 58% percent of those citizens live in urban areas. The capital city is Skopje, which is estimated to have 500,000 inhabitants.

The official language of Macedonia is Macedonian. This is a type of Southern Slavic language, and it is somewhat similar to Bulgarian. Other languages commonly found in Macedonia include Albanian, Bulgarian, Romani, Turkish, Serbian, Vlach, Circassian and Greek.
