By Reno Rollins
Casino gambling is legal in Luxembourg. It appears that other forms of gambling are considered illegal outside of a casino, but poker continues to grow in popularity throughout the country.
In Luxembourg, a game of chance is defined as a game that offers an opportunity to play for prizes, where success depends on an unknown future event which cannot be influenced by the player.
The minimum age for casino gambling is 18.
Casinos in Luxembourg
The earliest request to build a casino in Luxembourg came in 1852. In the 1930s, a member of the Grand Ducal family of Luxembourg lost large areas of his land at a gaming table in Monte Carlo. After he returned home, he was banned from leaving the country, and gambling in Luxembourg was banned for the next 40 years.
Currently, there is one casino operating within Luxembourg.
- Casino 2000 (Rue Th. Flammang, Mondorf-les-Bains, Luxembourg) Slot machines are open from 10am until 3am on Monday thru Thursday and 10am to 4am on Friday thru Sunday. The casino is open from 7pm on Monday thru Saturday and from 4pm on Sunday. The casino offers 9,000 square feet of gaming space with 280 slot machines and seven table games (American Roulette, Blackjack, French Roulette). A 31-room hotel, two bars and three restaurants are also located on the premises.
Euros are used as currency in the casino, but all major forms of currency are accepted for play. The dress code requires men to wear a jacket with no sneakers. An entrance fee of 2.50 euros is charged, but customers can also buy tickets good for a month’s worth of visits (or a year’s worth). Free gaming lessons are given, and the staff is fluent in English, German and French.
