The website for the Gibraltar National Lottery is located at www.gibraltar.gov.gi/about_gib/lottery/ lottery_index.htm.
The lottery was founded after World War II to build new housing for the population that had been evacuated. The first drawing took place in October of 1947. Annual sales for the lottery are estimated to be in the range of 4.5 million pounds. Profits go to the treasury of Gibralter, and non-residents are permitted to buy tickets.
The conventional lottery consists of 24 drawing a year. 21 of these are held on a bi-weekly basis, with tickets costing 10 pounds each. The top prize for the regular drawing is 100,000 pounds. 23 winning numbers are drawn for each event, with 20,000 tickets being issued. Odds of winning are 1 in 8.32.
Three “Bumper” events are also held with higher ticket prices and larger prizes. The July Bumper costs 20 pounds per ticket and pays a top prize of 250,000 pounds. Overall odds of winning during the July Bumper are 1 in 7.8, with 35 winning tickets being drawn.
The Christmas Draw is the biggest event of the year, with tickets costing 20 pounds and a top prize of 500,000 pounds. 50,000 tickets are sold for this event.
The final Bumper event is dubbed the “Three Kings.” Held at the beginning of January, tickets cost 20 pounds and yield a first prize of 200,000. Exactly 20,000 tickets are issued for this draw.
Lottery winnings are not subject to tax, and one ticket can win multiple prizes. The prize return for the Gibraltar Lottery is among the highest anywhere, with 77 percent of players winning some form of prize.
