Cayman Islands Gambling

Cayman Islands Gambling Info

Gambling is illegal on the Cayman Islands.

The Cayman Islands are a tax shelter for off-shore corporations, especially for many American firms. One would think the Caymans would take the next logical step and allow for other non-traditional business practices, but this does not appear to be the case.

Cayman Islands Facts

A British overseas territory, the Cayman Islands are located in the Caribbean Sea. They are made up of the islands of Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. Besides being a major destination for tourists, the islands are also known for being a major offshore financial center. The capital and primary city is George Town, which is located on the southwest coast of Grand Cayman.

The islands are located 400 miles south of Miami, 180 miles south of Cuba and 195 miles northwest of Jamaica. The islands of Little Cayman and Cayman Brac are located 80 miles east of Grand Cayman.

The island of Grand Cayman is divided into six districts:

- George Town
- East End
- North Side
- West Bay
- Bodden Town
- Cayman Brac and Little Cayman

Christopher Columbus was the first to sight the islands in 1503, but the first recorded visit came when Sir Francis Drake landed in 1586. The islands were ceded to England in 1670 as part of the Treaty of Madrid.

Until 1962, the Cayman Islands were governed as a single colony along with Jamaica. During this year, Jamaica became an independent Commonwealth, and the Caymans became a British overseas territory.

In 2004, the island of Grand Cayman was hit by Hurricane Ivan, and 70% of the buildings were damaged. Within two years, however, the island was back to normal. The Cayman Islands have been hit by hurricanes more than any other place in the world.

The population of the Caymans is estimated as 50,000, with more than 100 different nationalities living there. The majority religion is Christianity, and English is the official language.

The national currency is the Cayman Islands Dollar. It is printed on the island of Grand Cayman.

About three-fourths of the annual GDP comes from tourism. Attractions include Seven Mile Beach, the natural rock formations of Hell and what many consider the best SCUBA diving in the world.
