Gambling in Cambodia
Cambodian Betting Law Information
By Reno Rollins
Gambling in Cambodia is legal. Casinos and the lottery are the most popular forms of gambling, but the country also offers sports betting. Greyhound racing is being developed for the future. You must be 18 years or older to gamble inside the casinos.
The first casinos were opened in Cambodia in 1994. In 1998, Prime Minister Hun Sen banned gaming within 200 kilometers of the capital (although one still exists). In 1999, the first casino was built near the Thai border.
Facts About Cambodia
The Kingdom of Cambodia is located in Southeast Asia and has a population of over 13 million people. The capital of the country is Phnom Penh.
Cambodia is bordered by Thailand to the west and northwest, Laos to the northeast and Vietnam to the east and southeast. The country’s primary revenue comes from garment making and tourism. By 2006, it was estimated that the number of visitors to Cambodia had surpassed the 1.7 million mark.
The official language of the country is Khmer, although English and some French are also spoken. The primary currency is the U.S. dollar, while the Cambodian Riel is used for amounts less than one dollar.
The largest demographic in Cambodia is the Khmer people. Cambodians are often called Khmer, though this is only appropriate for the ethnic Khmer majority.
Casinos in Cambodia
A number of Cambodian casinos can be found in the town of Poipet, which is technically located beyond the official border between Cambodia and Thailand. Since casino gambling is illegal in Thailand, this arrangement allows Thai gamblers to visit the casinos without crossing over into another country (and having to deal with visa hassles).
This area is considered the biggest Asian gambling market behind Macau. It is estimated that the casinos in this area bring in between $7.5 million and$12.5 million per year. All the standard games are available, and particular attention is paid to baccarat, with many casinos offering between 60 and 90 tables for the game.
A large number of Vietnamese citizens also cross the border to gamble. It is estimated that between 250 and 300 Vietnamese cross the border every day to gamble (between 600 and 700 on the weekend).
In 2004, casinos in Cambodia suffered setbacks due to bird flu, acute respiratory syndrome and rising promotion costs. However, they have managed to bounce back from these problems.
In 2006, tax revenues from casinos across the country amounted to $13 million U.S. dollars for Cambodia.
