Botswana Gambling Information
Casino gambling in Botswana is legal. Other forms of gambling currently are not allowed (this even extends to a national lottery). To play in the casinos, you must be at least 18 years old.
In 2002, a Gaming and Gambling Policy was passed by Parliament. This called for a national lottery and the halt to additional casino licenses for cities which already have casinos. As of this writing, no action has been taken on this policy.
In 2003, the government conducted a study which concluded that legislation regarding gambling needed to be updated.
Botswana is a member of the Gaming Regulators African forum, which also includes Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe Swaziland and South Africa.

The people from Botswana are referred to as Batswana. The singular of Batswana is Motswana. Therefore, if you are a citizen of Botswana, regardless of your ethnicity, you are a Motswana.

Like many nations in Africa, Botswana suffers from a high AIDS rate. In 2002, it was 38.8% for adults. Since 2003, the government has tried to combat this by offering cheap anti-retroviral drugs and an information campaign.

Moonlite Casino-Gaborone Hotel (Gaborone, Botswana) The casino offers 50 gaming machines. It was the first independent, citizen-owned casino in the capital city of Gaborone. It officially opened on October 19th of 2006.

Lottery in Botswana
As of this writing, there is no national lottery in Botswana. However, this may soon change. The lottery operator known as Uthingo lost their license to operate in South Africa in 2007, and they are considering making a move to Botswana.
But Botswana does not have a law which allows for the operation of a national lottery, and that has led to a series of delays. Still, a bill is expected to be taken before the country’s Parliament in February of 2008.
