Bahraini Gambling Laws

Gambling is illegal in Bahrain. This is no doubt due to the fact that Bahrain is a Muslim nation. At one time, hotels and discos could offer gambling games as part of their entertainment activities, but this has also been stopped in recent years.

Bahrain Information

Bahrain is an island nation in the Persian Gulf. The smallest Arab state, it lies to the east of Saudi Arabia and is connected to that country by the King Fahd Causeway. With a total area of 266 square miles, it is slightly larger than the Isle of Man but smaller than King Fahd International Airport in Saudi Arabia. It was declared a kingdom in 2002.

Man has lived in Bahrain since ancient times, and many have pointed to the island as the true location of the Garden of Eden. Over the course of history, it has been ruled by Arabs, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians and Greeks. Bahrain did not become Muslim until the Arabs took control of the island. It has also been known by the names Dilmun, Tylos, Awal, and Mishmahig.

The country made a major leap forward when King Hamad ibn Isa Al Khalifah took over for his father as head of state. He gave women the right to vote, instituted elections for the parliament and released all political prisoners.

Bahrain is divided into five governorates. They are:

- Capital
- Central
- Muharraq
- Northern
- Southern

Important towns and cities include: Al Manama, Al Muharraq, Hamad Town, Isa Town, Riffa, Jidhafs, Sitrah and Al-Hidd.

Bahrain has the fastest growing economy in the Arab world, and they can also boast of having the freest economy in the Middle East. In 2007, they became the first Arab country to enact unemployment benefits.

The main religion on the island nation is Islam. While this comprises 80% of the population, another 10% follow Christianity, while the remaining 10% follow various other faiths.

The official languages of Bahrain are English and Arabic. Other languages which may be commonly heard are Urdu, Hindi and Persian.

The tourism industry is strong in Bahrain, with over eight million visitors coming in each year. Many of these come from neighboring Arab states, but an increasing number are now visiting from outside the region. This has been helped by the fact that Bahrain has a Formula One Race Track, which is a first for any country in the Arab world.
