Gambling is illegal in Algeria for religious reasons. The Koran forbids its followers from participating in any manner of gambling, and 98.5 % of Algerian citizens are Sunni Muslims.

Algeria is officially known as the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria. The second largest country in the African continent, it is also the 11th largest country in the world when it comes to total area. It is bordered by Libya, Tunisia, Niger, Mali, Mauritania and Morocco. It is defined as an Arab, Islamic and Berber country.
A member of the United Nations, Algeria also belongs to the African Union, Arab League and OPEC. It also helped contribute to the creation of the Arab Maghreb Union.
The country is divided into 48 provinces. The main cities of Algeria include Algiers (the capital), Constantine and Oran.
As of 2006, the population of Algeria was 32,930,091. Most citizens live in the coastal areas to the north, but a minority exist in regions of the Sahara. Thirty percent of the population is under the age of 15.
Ninety-seven percent of Algerians are classified as Berber/Arab, and the dominant religion is Sunni Muslim. Catholics, Christians and Jews can also be found scattered throughout the country. The Jewish community, however, has dwindled over the years, as most have emigrated to either Israel or France.
The most spoken language in the country is Algerian Arabic, although Standard Arabic is still used for more formal occasions. While Arabic remains the official language, Tamazight has also been recognized as a national language. The most widely studied foreign language is French.
Algeria relies on fossil fuels for their economy, and they rank 14th in the world for petroleum reserves. Their natural gas reserves rank as the 8th most in the world.
Women play an important role in Algerian society, as they make up 60% of the judges and 70% of the lawyers. They also dominate the medical industry, and 60 % of university students are female.
