Tasteless Promotion Galls Gambling World
by Margaret Oliveira, News Staff Writer
September 12, 2007
Surely, the events of September 11, 2001 exist in an
irony-free zone in the hearts and minds of not just
Americans, but citizens the world over. Maybe that’s why
the news that an online gambling site had made a
tasteless reference to 9/11 is such galling news. The
Virtual online casino group, based out of Costa Rica,
and powered by Real Time Gaming, is somewhat infamous in
the tightly-knit internet casinos worldwide community,
due to its frequent player complaints and questionable
business practices. When Virtual’s owner made a crass
offer themed by the six-year anniversary of 9/11/01
yesterday, folks’ tolerance for the company’s hijinks
went flying out the window.
“Danny Virtual,” the owner and operator of the Virtual
online casino group, launched a promotion called the
“911% Twin Towering Total Bonus.” Reports say that
Virtual padded the blundering and insensitive internet
gambling promo with some pseudo-heartfelt words about
the profundity of his sympathy towards the families
still grieving the loss of their loved ones. Outrageous
behavior is nothing new for Danny Virtual, or for the
Virtual company itself, which seems to thrive off the
premise that online gambling players will not research
their game options too thoroughly before parting with
their hard-earned money. The gross inappropriateness of
the tie-in with the biggest terrorist attack on American
soil, however, cannot be disputed or matched.
The stunned online casinos community responded almost
immediately with outrage and criticism. The anger was
not just limited to American internet gambling players,
either. Players all over the globe expressed disgust
with Virtual. RTG CEO Mike McMain has said that he will
look into the issue, but Danny Virtual is not
apologizing for his heartless internet casino promotion.
Virtual says that the gimmick was his own way of
remembering the victims of 9/11.
