News of the Month...
It's been known for all too long that many Canadians
have a penchant for online gambling. Now, it seems the
bulk of those taking delight in the freedom's of
gambling from home could be young adults under the age
of thirty-five. According to the 2008 National Gambling
Report, which was recently presented by pollster, Allan
Gregg, at the 2008 Canadian Gaming Summitt, people under
the age of thirty-five are likely to be gambling online
more frequently than any other age demographic.
Resulting from a poll of 3,047 Canadians, the statistics
show that 56% of those surveyed under the age of 35
considered online casino gambling, sports betting and
online poker acceptable forms of wagering, compared to
35% of of those over the age of 35 and 20% of those
surveyed 55 years and older. Although the report does
not necessarily contend this age group is actually
gambling online more, it suggests a propensity for this
demographic to do so. On the other hand, these figures
could simply allude to the fact that younger generations
are more inclined to be familiar with and embrace
technology, while older generations are more set in
their traditional, non-technological ways. Either way,
online gambling is still a hit in Canada and the nearby
Mohawk reserve of Kahnawake, where the Kahnawake Gaming
Commission licenses many respected online casinos (and
some not too good one's I might add). It is estimated
that Canadians spend from $300 to $400 million on online
gambling per year. The entire industry is estimated to
draw in over $15.3 billion, with government and
charities receiving almost $9 billion.
