News of the Month...
With the new year
here, the online gambling industry is hoping and
expecting for some positive things to come in 2009 -
namely more regulation on the international scene. The
land-based gambling industry, however, is facing some
tougher hurdles. According to Spectrum Gaming's "Top 21
Trends in Gaming", which addresses ongoing changes in
technology, operational development, consumer trends,
marketing trends and politics, eight of these trends are
directly tied into the economic challenges awaiting the
global economy. The overall prediction is that recovery
from the downturn that has been hitting land-based
casinos over the last year is not expected until 2010 -
at the earliest. Some of the most interesting trend
predictions for 2009 include the development of new
technologies that will help cut operating costs,
increased efforts by Eastern European countries to meet
EU standards (which is likely to include more
liberalized online gambling laws), a surge in global
branding for betting companies, new alliances between
commercial casino operators, tribal casinos and
independent investors, increased funding for lobbyists
working to regulate online gambling in the U.S., lower
prices for casino hotel rooms and accommodations and
support from China to increase visitors in Macau. The
rest of the trend predictions can be read at
