News of the Month...
UK Gambling Companies
Looking for Friendlier Taxes
Starting off the month of August, it just wouldn't be
fair to not talk about the drama playing out in the UK
online gambling scene. Following reports earlier in 2009
that top shelf online casino and internet betting
operators would likely move from the UK to other
offshore online gambling regulatory jurisdictions with
friendlier tax laws, it now appears these speculations
have some serious merit. Just last week, reports in
several leading UK news publications suggest that two of
the UK's largest bookmaker's and casino operators,
William Hill and Ladbrokes, will be unveiling plans to
move their operations from outside of the UK. Will Hill,
in particular, has been vocal about the heavy 15% tax
burden imposed by the UK Gambling Commission. Chief
Executive, Ralph Topping has expressed on more than one
occasion that it is becoming increasingly difficult to
compete with other gambling companies licensed in
offshore jurisdictions with far less tax burdens.
Specifically, Will Hill is now indicating a move to the
online gambling friendly territory of Gibraltar is
likely, where tax rates are just 1.5%. Compared to the
current 15% rate the company is now paying, it seems
like a no-brainer why Will Hill would make such a move.
In terms of regulatory regimes, Gibraltar is as strict
as they come. Very similar to the regulations imposed by
the UK, Gibraltar licensed online casinos still must
meet the same auditing and testing practices imposed by
the UK Gambling Commission. As for Ladbrokes, they have
not been as outspoken as Will Hill, but have nonetheless
alluded to making changes as well, especially if Will
Hill does first. In ironically similar news, the
Gibraltar based 32red Casino, has filed a trademark
infringement suit against Will Hill, whose online casino
portal 32Vegas (which they acquired through a deal with
Playtech), is causing confusion with 32Red's customers -
so says 32Red. Consequently, 32Red thinks that Will Hill
should compensate them for losses and damages. However
that turns out, maybe it will just have to play out in
Gibraltar after all. |
