News of the Month...
With online gambling still a hot topic in the U.S.
Congress, a bill that calls for an in-depth study of the
pastime - HR 2140 - has been put on hold until September
while Congress adjourns for the August recess. The bill,
which was authored by Nevada Representative Shelly
Berkely (a supporter of online gambling regulation), is
called "The Internet Gambling Study Act", and proposes
to commission a large, independent study of online
gambling activities in the U.S., including an assessment
of the implications of regulation or prohibition. The
bill was scheduled for markup last week, but because of
a full schedule of twelve other bills, including lengthy
discussions on whether former adviser to President
George Bush, Karl Rove, should be held in contempt or
not, put a delay on the markup until after the summer
recess. As the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement
Act still copes with integration and enforcement issues,
momentum for online gambling regulation on a State level
continues to build in the U.S. Congress. |
