Tropicana Casino’s Great Publicity

9 June 2011 by admin

tropicana-casino-andRight now, no casino in the United States is getting better publicity than the Tropicana Casino in Atlantic Casino. Companies are always spending millions on advertising in order to get their name out there and get a leg up on the competition, but the ads have mixed results. Some ad campaigns work and some flop. Right now, the Tropicana is being marketed better than anyone and has a better reputation than anyone, and they didn’t even do this on purpose.

Recently, new owners of the casino decided to adopt an aggressive strategy. The company was badly in debt when Carl Icahn bought it during bankruptcy hearings. In an effort to make back the money quickly, it was decided to feature high-stakes table games, including craps and blackjack. Because of the house edge, high-stakes games should help the casino make money faster, but there is a risk to allowing such large bets: the stakes are also high for the casino.

Offering the high-stakes games gave the Tropicana Casino some good publicity, but not the great publicity of which I write. That happened as a result. Last month, a man named Don Johnson strolled into the casino cool as Sonny Crocket and won $5.8 million playing high-stakes blackjack. Okay, this isn’t the same Don Johnson as the actor from Miami Vice, but in gambling circles he is currently almost as famous (and I’m sure he suddenly is more popular).

Then last week lightning struck for the second time. An unidentified man won $5.3 million at high-stakes craps during a single night. He was nice enough to leave a tip of $150,000 for the dealers, so they like him, but he also helped the casino.

It may seem odd to insist that two gamblers that took the casino for $11 million helped the casino, but they did. In the short run, they hurt business. Don Johnson single-handedly ruined a month that up until then had been going well. In the long run, though, this is the type of publicity you can’t buy – even for $11 million.

Casinos make their money on the promise of getting rich. Over time, though, people can become jaded and think of it as a rigged system. Big wins like we have had at the Tropicana reminds people that you can win big and walk out of the casino filthy rich. People are thinking of those winners and are excited and after it happened twice at the same place, you better believe that a lot of those players are going to put the Tropicana at the top of their list.
