Tennessee Raids Gambling Businesses

tennessee-location-mapOffers in Knox County, Tennessee are cracking down on the big, important crimes. No, I’m not talking about drugs, murder, child abuse or anything like that. I mean gambling, of course. On Wednesday, the sheriff’s department raided three locations in West Knoxville and West Knox County. Six people were found at the first location, but the other two were abandoned.

Officers first hit an alleged poker operation, where six individuals were found. The officers seized four gaming tables and confiscated approximately $4,000 of cash. No charges were filed against the individuals playing at or operating the establishment.

The officers then arrived at two other operations, but no one was at either location. Martha Dooley, a spokesperson for the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, said that “apparently, word had spread” and the other businesses were shut down after being tipped off about the first raid. At the first location, though no one was around, officers did seize four poker tables, which were set up for games that night. Owners of the business were found at a nearby bar. At the second business, nothing was found.

No charges were filed, but the authorities handed over the results of the gambling investigation to the Knox County District Attorney General, Randy Nichols. Earlier, the sheriff’s office announced that it would begin a series of gambling raids. This was the second day of raids since that announcement. On June 1, authorities raided a gambling operation where up to 60 customers were playing. The officers seized $42,000 in cash and confiscated eight gaming tables. The raids on Wednesday were made possible due to information gained from the June 1 bust.
