Shift in Mobile Gaming Trend for Online Casinos

2 March 2011 by admin

Forget Year of the Monkey, or whatever year we are in from the Chinese Zodiac, this is the Year of Mobile Gambling. The trend for online casinos in 2011 is already set and it is only the beginning of March. This will be the year in which mobile online gambling will come into its own.

While mobile gambling and mobile online casino apps are not entirely new, it has been predicted that there will be a shift in platforms this year. Over the last year or so online casino games and mobile online casino apps have been developed for the Apple iPhone. It was the most popular and widely used smartphone on the market.

But the Android platform has been on the rise over the course of the last year. It has been reported that the top five selling smartphones operate with the Android platform while the iPhone and its platform has fallen to sixth place. I always knew that Apple’s exclusivity would bite them in the butt. However there will always be die-hard Apple fans. But the rest of the world is looking at Android operated smartphones.

Because of this shift in popularity from the iPhone to the Android, online casino game software developers are working with their mobile partners to create apps for the Android platform when before they had focused their attention on the iPhone, and the shift is beginning to make itself known in the online casino industry.

For starters William Hill launched a mobile app of its casino software in January. But the app was launched to the Android platform. This comes soon on the heels of William Hill’s entrance into the iPhone world. The decision to expand into the Android market, as explained by William Hill’s Director of Mobile Development, Michael Byrne, is to reach out to their customer base that are not on the iPhone platform.

Also coming along for the Android is a new sports betting app that would allow Nevada residents to place their sports bets via their mobile devices. Or more specifically, their Android mobile devices. The Nevada sports betting app will be coming from American Wagering, Inc. There is hope that the app will be launched in time for the March Madness tournament later this month. For now the sports betting app is still being tested by the Nevada Gaming Control Board for things such as not allowed underage gambling and to make sure it is limited to Nevada residents only since Nevada is only one of three states in the entire United States that allows sports betting. Hopes are high that the app will be launched to the Android platform before March Madness is underway.

As 2011 progresses I have a very strong feeling that we will see more online casinos releasing mobile apps. Laptops were great for mobile use, but mobile devices like smartphones and tablet PCs are beginning their takeover of the mobile market. Mobile online casino apps will be on the rise. Bring on the Year of the Mobile Casino App!
