Online Slots or Online Video Poker?

13 June 2011 by admin

Not too long ago onlinecasinosuite.com ran a piece about the new online slots games that Microgaming was releasing this month. One of those games was called Reel Play Poker Online Slots. This was not the first online video poker game from the software developer to put a twist on the game. But it was the first to incorporate an online slots element. But with the game now released and after really looking at it I have to wonder which is it—online video poker or online slots?

For starters Reel Play Poker is not found in the online slots section of a Microgaming powered online casino. Instead it is found in the video poker section, but it is under its own tab for Reel Play Poker. So this lends to the argument that this is an online video poker game.

But let’s take a moment to look at the game play. Before play actually starts players have twenty paylines that they can select from if they do not want to play all twenty. Wagering on those paylines also includes selecting a denomination for the coin and the number of coins per payline. Oh, on that note each payline can take up to twenty coin wagers; this could lead to some pretty hefty wagers per spin/round. So the wagering element is like an online slots game.

On to game play. After settling on how to wager, players do not click Spin. Instead they click Deal. At this point five cards are put up in a box below the five reels. The game will automatically suggest which cards to keep. Players can easily override the suggestions if they want. Once the cards to keep or not keep are set, the player can then click Spin. The five reels will spin. Any cards that were held will fill up its corresponding reel while the rest will eventually fill with other cards. So here we have a mostly online slots feeling again.

Payouts are determined not by matching symbols, but by video poker hands. So there we have an online video poker element. But payouts are not limited to only rows. Remember those paylines? Video poker hands can also line up on those twenty paylines like how combinations can line up on different paylines in an online slots game. So, again we are back to online slots.

My overall feeling is that this is a jazzed up online slots game. Bravo to Microgaming in creating this interesting combination of online slots and online video poker. But I am inclined to see it as a jazzed up online slots game, and I think it should be moved out of the Video Poker section of Microgaming powered online casinos.
