New Pro-Internet Gambling Coalition Formed

26 July 2011 by admin

The ranks of those in favor of Americans gambling online has expanded. Joining the likes of law makers seeking to protect American citizens in what is becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment is the coalition Fair Play USA.

Fair Play USA officially got underway today (Tuesday) and already has a couple of high profile advisors attached to it, including the professional poker player Greg Raymer and former Homeland Security and former Pennsylvania governor Tom Ridge. Heading the coalition is Marisa McNee. Initially this might sound like a small and insignificant bunch, but that is where you might be on the wrong side. The Fair Play USA coalition has already received funding from Caesar’s Entertainment and MGM. This is a coalition with a purpose.

The idea here is to push on federal lawmakers and bend their ear to what American citizens as a whole are saying: that they want real money online gambling. Fair Play USA aims to act as a force to help convince federal lawmakers that a stronger regime is necessary, one that allows US citizens to play online poker and other online casino games, but to also protect these citizens while they play as well use online gambling as a source of revenue from taxes collected from the online casino operators.

So far Fair Play USA has ten principles that they want to try to open up federal eyes to. Some of those principles are aimed at tools that can be used by law enforcement to go after illegal operations in a regulatory environment while still allowing US citizens to play online poker and other online casino games for real money in a protected legal environment. Fair Play USA’s principles also include the establishment of a strict regulatory infrastructure to better define what is a legal online casino operation and what is not. Such a regulatory infrastructure would also not base the loose enforcement of legal and illegal online gambling on financial institutions, such as banks and credit card companies. Currently financial institutions are left with the enforcement of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) because they are the ones who chose to either process or not process a transaction to or from an online casino.

Today is only the first official day for Fair Play USA. They look to bring on more advisors to strengthen their coalition before really wading in to help the movement to convince the federal government that legalizing and regulating real money online poker and online casinos is not a bad thing. For Fair Play USA, according to McNee, “This is about educating the public and policymakers with a set of principles.” Those principles are meant to help move real money online casinos and online gambling in the US forward.
