Jose Canseco Subs Twin for Boxing Match

28 March 2011 by admin

jose-canseco-steroidsCustomers at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino paid good money to watch Jose Canseco get punched in the face. It turns out, though, that Canseco allegedly sent his identical twin brother to get pummeled for him, much to the chagrin of the customers and event organizers.

Jose Canseco, the former Major League Baseball slugger known more for being a steroid user than for hitting 462 career home runs, has never shied away from controversy. When it was announced that he would appear in a Celebrity Boxing match, no one was surprised that he would stoop to that level. Billy Padden, who seems to actually be a professional boxer or trainer or something, was set to fight him, making him one of the most envied people on Earth, right up there with that guy who’s married to Kate Beckinsale. Billy Padden was going to get the pleasure of punching Jose Canseco in the face, something most people could only dream about. It was almost too good to be true! And then it didn’t happen, or did it?

Jose Canseco was paid $10,000 for the fight. The problem is, according to the event staff at the casino, Jose Canseco never showed up for the fight. It turns out he sent his brother, Ozzie Canseco, who is his identical twin. It’s like one of those zany family comedies where the twins switch places to pull a prank on their parents, but like the audience of those movies, no one was laughing.

You see, Jose Canseco is famous. He is well known for a long Major League career, hitting 462 home runs (at least 20 of which would have cleared the fence without the help of performance enhancing drugs), and being an abrasive, arrogant jerk. This rich and famous ingrate is exactly the kind of guy people want to see get punched in the face by another person who may or may not be a “celebrity.” Ozzie, on the other hand, played in a total of 24 Major League games and had a total of 13 hits his entire career. To my knowledge, he is not universally hated and has never written a self-important trashy autobiography. He’s also not a celebrity, and since the event was organized by a group called “Celebrity Boxing,” you figure that having a celebrity is something they require. Therefore, people aren’t clamoring to see him get punched in the face. Sending him in Jose’s stead is not fair to the people and it could also be fraud.

cansecos_headJose Canseco’s most remembered play on a baseball field was that time a home run was hit by bouncing off of his head. He certainly wasn’t using his head when he decided to skip out on his paid job in the Hollywood, Florida casino. You see, boxers usually take their shirts off to fight. When the man who looked like Jose took his off, the event organizers noticed that he did not have the tattoos that Jose had in the advertising for the fight. Oops.

The large man who is unfortunate enough to look like Jose Canseco but was probably Ozzie was escorted from the casino. The promoters have said that they will stop payment on the check made to Canseco. It is not known if they will pursue any legal action.
