Big in 2010: Fantasy-Themed Online Slots

3 January 2010 by admin

This is part of a continuing series looks back at who and what was big in the online gambling world in the year 2010. Earlier parts of the Big in 2010 series can be found here.

lord of the rings-the-ringOnline slots are popular for a variety of reasons, such as the lack of necessary skill and the fact that the games can be as short as you want. Perhaps the biggest appeal of online slots, though, is the theme. Slots come in virtually every theme imaginable, including sports, video games, movies, comic books, vacation destinations, historical periods and more.

Though there were a lot of popular slots, there is no doubt that 2010 was a big year for fantasy-themed online slots. Two slots dominated the online casino world for large parts of the year: Thunderstruck II and the Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

thunderstruck_ii1Thunderstruck II is a sequel to a popular Microgaming title with a Nordic theme (no, it’s not based on an AC/DC song). The online slot features Thor, the Norse God of Thunder, Loki, their God of Mischief, and more. This mythological game has crisp graphics that look straight out of a graphic novel. The game symbols are animated, with Loki twirling a fireball, Odin being surrounded by flying ravens and Valkyrie riding a white horse. Fireballs, bolts of lightning and appropriate music punctuate all winning spins. For geeks into things like Norse mythology (and that’s a big part of the online slot demographic) from the time Thunderstruck II was introduced, this was the game to play.

At least, it was until the new Lord of the Rings slot launched. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is an online slot based upon Peter Jackson’s film adaptation of the first part of the trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien. Jackson’s movies broke all kinds of box office records and proved everyone wrong who said that a good and faithful adaptation of Tolkien’s work was impossible.

lordoftheringsslotThe online slot was the perfect game for fans of the movie and book, and there are a whole lot of those. The game featured images from the film, including Elijah Wood as Frodo, Ian McKellen as Gandalf and more. There are also symbols of the ring and the Eye of Sauron. When used in a winning combination, the eye invokes the creepy voice of Sauron, who says things like “I see you.”

By intercutting video scenes from the movie and providing story-based gameplay that followed along with the story, the Lord of the Rings slot drew in new fans by the hoards. In a short time, people had all but forgotten about Thor and Thunderstruck II. They were all about Frodo and the ring.

Few online slots, if any, generated that type of buzz before their release and few, if any, became that popular once they did hit the casinos. Whether you are a fan of slots or not, there is no disputing that fantasy-themed online slots were big in 2010.
