Understanding Betting Systems, What They Are and Why to Not Use Them

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

I am sure you like to maintain your bankroll no matter what online casino game you favor. The better we hang on to our bankrolls the more confident we feel. That being said, players who use betting systems when playing online casino games puzzle me.

A betting system is a progression system designed to tell a player how to wager on online poker, online blackjack, online roulette and just about any other online casino game that you can think. There are positive progressions and negative progressions in betting systems. First we will look at a negative progression. It is my hope that once players understand them they will turn to stronger betting strategies that do not put their bankrolls at risk.

A negative betting progression has players doubling their wager every time they lose a round of the online casino game they are playing. The player will keep on doubling the amount of their wager until they win around, at which point they return to their starting wager. So for the player who starts with a $10 wager on say, online blackjack, he will double to $20 if he loses that round; he would then increase to $40, then to $80, then to $160, then to $320 and so on until either he runs his bankroll out or he wins. In that example, the player’s wager was up to $320 in five rounds, which in online blackjack can happen in under ten minutes.

A positive betting progression works like the negative progression except the player doubles their wager each time they win a round, only returning to their starting wager when they lose a round. Of the two, the positive progression has a longer livelihood, but there is still a high risk of running a bankroll out. But players tend to gravitate to the negative progression, drawn by the thrill of the increased wagers.

That thrill is what pulls players into using a betting system. Other players fall into using them for a lack of knowing any other way to wager. Some online casino games have betting strategies that work within the rules and structure of their games. If not there is always flat betting, which means betting at the same rate every round. Flat betting is a safer route to go that also allows a player to have control over their how they wager and to hang on to their bankrolls.

About That Gamble Option on Slots

Friday, June 17th, 2011

Gamble OptionIf you play a lot of online slots, there’s a good chance you’ve come across games with the gamble option. You might be thinking, hey, aren’t I already gambling? What is this craziness? Yes, you were already gambling by playing the slot, but the gamble option allows you to gable your winnings on each winning spin.

Here’s how it works. Let’s say you spin the slot machine and you hit a winning combination where the casino gives you $10. You can either take the $10 and put it back in your bankroll or you can choose to gamble it. If you gamble it, you generally have two options – double or nothing or quadruple or nothing.

The double or nothing bet is going to give you two options and a 50% chance of guessing correctly. The most common one is guessing the color of a card. There will be a deck of cards face down and you have to guess whether the next card will be black or red. If you guess black and the card is flipped over, revealing a black card, instead of $10, you win $20 for that winning spin. However, if the card is red, you win nothing and that $10 that you had won is now gone. That is the risk of the gamble option.

The quadruple or nothing bet is going to give you four options with a 25% chance of guessing correctly. Again, the most common one is using a deck of cards, this time choosing the right suit. There will be a deck of cards face down and you have to guess which suit the next card will be. It could be spades, hearts, diamonds or clubs. If you guess correctly, instead of $10 you win $40. However, if you guess wrong, that spin won you nothing.

So is it a good deal? We here at like to keep you informed and provide you with the best chances of winning. For that reason, I can’t really recommend using the gamble feature on an online slot. The house edge on that is much higher than on the regular slot game. Also, much like letting it ride when playing blackjack or another table game, I recommend keeping your winnings instead of wagering with them. That way, you know you’ll at least have some money to show for your gaming. Some people like the gamble feature even knowing that it has bad odds, though. They love the drama and risk. If that’s you, then there’s nothing wrong with using it. Just make sure you know the odds.

Online Casino Games

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

One of the features that goes overlooked when people are shopping for an online casino is the game selection. Some people think that a casino is a casino. Sure, some are safer than others, so you have to look out for that, but once you’ve found a safe casino, they’re all the same, right? Wrong.

A good selection of online casino games can set a great casino apart from an average casino. Let’s say all you want to play is online slots. In that case, it might not matter which casino you play at. Virtually every casino has a ton of slots because there are so many varieties and the games are so popular. Still, if you want a particular game, each software company only licenses their games to certain casinos.

If you want other games, though, you have to be choosier. If you are looking for online poker, some online casinos carry several different varieties of poker games. Some casinos only have a few. Some casinos, believe it or not, don’t have online poker at all. If you only want to play poker, it might be best to play at an online poker room that only carries poker and doesn’t have other online casino games. The same goes for other games. Selections of blackjack, roulette, baccarat and craps games vary widely at the different online casinos.

Another thing that varies widely is tournaments. Some online casinos don’t have tournaments at all, while others online have slot tournaments. Some also have blackjack, poker and roulette. Tournaments are a great way to play your favorite games in a slightly different way, with a more competitive atmosphere at less risk.

If you are new to online casinos and don’t know which games you like, that’s okay. Any good casino is going to have free trial versions of their games, which lets you bet using pretend money while you get the hang of the game and try new things. Once you figure out what online casino games you like, and therefore which casino, it’s time to start playing for real money.

Hackers Show Need for Good Internet Casino Security

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

network_securityHackers have been in the news a lot lately. Earlier this year, WikiLeaks was all over the news for hacking into government sources, stealing sensitive information and sharing it. Governments aren’t the only ones targeted by hackers, though. They go after personal accounts and all kinds of businesses, including banks, retail stores, and of course online casinos.

A group calling itself Lulz Security said that they have hacked into the CIA’s website, Though no classified information is on the website, the agency said they are looking into the claim. Lulz Security has also taken responsibility for hacking Nintendo, the US Senate site and PBS, which they hacked in retaliation for a documentary they thought was too critical of Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks. Remember hearing about some group stealing personal information from 100 million Sony PlayStation users? That was also Lulz Security.

To date, there is no reason to believe that the group has targeted any online casinos, but many have. Brick and mortar casinos are enticing targets for thieves because there is so much money on site. That’s why they have to have so much security. Online casinos are enticing for the same reason: there is a lot of money exchanged in transactions with the company. If a hacker is able to obtain sensitive information on the transactions, they can come away with a lot of money. That is why online casinos need such good security.

That is why it’s so important to make sure you are only gambling at online casinos that have top-of-the-line security. You can scrimp on frills, bells and whistles and other unnecessary things at the website, but security must always be the best of the best. Here at Suite, we only recommend Internet casinos that have the best security, where we are confident your transactions are safe. With hackers in the news now more than ever, this isn’t a time to risk your money.

Real Money Online Gambling

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

Playing games is fun, but the activity is taken to a new level when your hard-earned cash is involved. I love playing Uno, chess and countless board games, but winning doesn’t have the same thrill as playing poker for money, because it doesn’t have the risk. Without the risk of losing money and the thrill of winning money, it doesn’t have the same drama. That is part of the reason why, despite an abundance of free casino games available online, people continue to flock to the real money casino games.

With real money online casinos, you put your money where your mouth is. Think you can beat someone at poker? Deposit some money, wager it on the hand and then see how confident you are. With your money at stake, the game is much more thrilling. It is that rush that traps problem gamblers, but to the 99.5% of gamblers that are able to play without having any problems, it is a safe but exciting way to spend your time.

You shouldn’t trust any casino with your money, though. That’s why we here at Suite have a list of casinos that we recommend and a blacklist of casinos that we recommend you avoid. If you are playing Uno with your friends or solitaire for free on your computer to pass the time, there is no risk. If you are playing for cash for somereal money online gambling, though, it is best to do your research and make sure you are playing at a safe, secure and reputable site.

A good and safe online casino will have top-notch encryption technology to keep your deposit and withdrawal transactions secure. It will have excellent security to protect you from hackers. Just as importantly, it will have games that are fair and pay out an acceptable percent of the time. You will find all of that with the online casinos we list here at Suite.

Weiner Antics Related to Gambling Addiction

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

Anthony-Weiner-007Over the last few weeks, the media has been in a frenzy over Weinergate. Congressman Anthony Weiner, a Representative of New York, first said that his Twitter was hacked and someone else sent the obscene photo to a young lady in Seattle. Eventually, when enough women came out of the woodwork and enough facts were out, Weiner admitted to numerous instances of inappropriate conduct. Now he is asking for a leave of absence from Congress.

According to some experts, his behavior is like that of someone addicted to gambling, alcohol or drugs. Recently Tiger Woods sought help for his sexual addiction, as did President Clinton after the Monica Lewinsky scandal. To some, claiming addiction is a cop-out for people who don’t want to take responsibility for their actions. To others, it is a legitimate problem, every bit as real as drug or alcohol addiction.

Timothy Lee, a social worker who treats sexual addiction, said that Weiner’s habit of sending inappropriate photos of himself to strangers probably started smaller and then escalated. He believes that Weiner likely started with a joke or flirtation with an acquaintance, but then got more risky. “The greater the risk in getting caught, the bigger the high,” he said. “I would look at his abusing his sexuality like someone else might abuse a drug.”

The gambler’s high is a very real phenomenon that affects problem gamblers when playing, but seems absurd to others. Actually, it even seems absurd to the gambling addict, because when it’s not being experienced, it’s not understood. That is the main problem. How do you treat a problem that you only notice when you are experiencing it?

There is another similarity between Weiner’s exploits and gambling addiction, say experts. Robert Weiss, the founder of the Sexual Recovery Institute, said that he was “exhibiting behavior of an addict. The secrecy, the risk taking, the denial.”

Strange as it may sound, Weiner’s problems can be a good thing for those with gambling problems. It brings the issue to the forefront of people’s minds. Weiner seemed to be a very normal, functioning member of society, serving in Congress while secretly dealing with the problems of his addiction. The same happens to problem gamblers everywhere. It’s easy to spot a problem once the gambler hits rock bottom. The key is to notice the problem before that. With Weiner’s highly publicized problems, maybe others will be quicker to spot the warning signs and the gamblers themselves will be quicker to admit they have a problem. Like text messaging and chatting online, playing at real money online casinos tends to be a private activity and one that can lead to addictive behavior for some people. Just because it’s private doesn’t mean it doesn’t affect others, though, and it doesn’t mean that you can’t get help.

Be Wary of Casino Extras

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

Online casinos love to offer bonuses, promotions and all kinds of other extra goodies in order to get your attention and get you playing there. While most of those extras are good for the player, you should never assume they are. Think of it this way: You are both the casino’s customer and competitor. The house wants you to be a happy customer, but they also want your money. Promotions and extras are done to satisfy both purposes, so don’t mistake them.

First, you have to look at the deposit bonuses offered by the online casinos. Usually they are good deals, but be sure to read the terms and conditions. If the wagering requirement is too high and you don’t play often, it might be better to play without accepting the bonus. Otherwise, it could take too long for you to be allowed to withdraw your winnings.

Progressive jackpots can be considered extras as well. Those are good if you hit them, but bad if you don’t. Progressive slots have a much higher house edge than a regular slot. They pay out less often than regular games, so you should only play them if you are shooting for the jackpot and don’t care if you lose money. If you want to play a fun game and hopefully come out ahead, a regular online slot would be better.

The most commonly misunderstood extra, though, is the side bet. There are a lot of side bet rule variations available at casinos online. Blackjack has a ton of them. They can be obvious, such as Perfect Pairs Blackjack, or more subtle. Most people don’t think of insurance as a side bet, but it is. That particular side bet has a big house edge and you are better off turning it down. In that case, the casino isn’t offering the deal to you for your own good, they are offering it for their own.

While most bonuses, promotions and other deals at casinos are good, you should never assume that it is right for you. Always remember that the casino wants your money, so don’t assume all deals are in your best interest. Inform yourself about the deal and make your own decision.

What’s Your Sign and is it Lucky?

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

Hey, baby, what’s your sign? I know that astrology is kind of hokey. Some people put a lot of stock in it and other just find it amusing. I am one of the later. I am a Virgo. I am supposed to be all kinds of critical and prefer to stay home and organize my closet. And while I will own up to being critical, no way do I want to organize the other dimension that is my closet. See what I mean? Astrology is meant to be taken with a grain of salt. But when it comes to luck and gambling, my sign is one of the lucky ones.

So what about the rest of the signs—how lucky are they? Virgin Games (no surprise it was Virgin, those Brits are up to all kinds of fun things over there) actually pulled 50,000 of their members birthdays (no names or other info attached) and had the signs analyzed. Virgin did this as a part of the fun they are having with tomorrow’s Friday the 13th. And the results? Which signs are supposedly the luckiest? Here is the run down from luckiest to not so much:

1. Aquarius
2. Capricorn
3. Taurus
4. Gemini
5. Virgo
6. Cancer
7. Leo
8. Aries
9. Pisces
10. Scorpio
11. Sagittarius
12. Libra

Sorry to all of our readers who are Libras. And congrats to all of you Aquarians and Capricorns out there! What is interesting is that once they had their polled results, Virgin gave that list of lucky to unlucky to Russell Grant, an expert astrologer. He finds it interesting, in a gambling sense, that Capricorn, Taurus and Virgo are on the upper end of the lucky list in terms of gambling: “That is probably because [these signs] will have cleverly worked out gambling tactics that help them improve their gambling odds. It is interesting to see that all the more cautious Earth signs, Capricorn, Taurus and Virgo, are in the top five lucky signs.”

Now to get serious. Astrology might be fun but it does not have any real weight in the casino or online casino. That slot machine does not care if you are a Capricorn or a Libra. And even if Grant is right about those Earth signs, it does not override the need for smarts and strategy when playing casino games. Games like blackjack and poker require strategy for players to make the most of them. And having a lucky sign is not a strategy.

With Virgin leading into tomorrow’s Friday the 13th like this I am willing to bet they have something fun up their sleeves for tomorrow. So if you are a player at Virgin Casino makes sure you have some strategy ready for tomorrow.

The Temptation of Using Auto-Play Mode at the Online Casino

Monday, April 4th, 2011

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to fall into the trappings of going fast. Sure, going “fast” isn’t necessarily a bad thing – the sooner the job gets done, the sooner you can go home, and consequently, the more free time you have. However, we all know that going too fast can also minimize the enjoyment of an experience, and at its worst – become a health hazard.

Just like going too fast in a car is dangerous to your health (not to mention those around you), going fast while betting at an online casino can be dangerous to your financial health. Needless to say, the internet is a fast-paced world. Inside an online casinos, it’s even faster. Granted, you don’t have to go fast. So let’s just say it’s easier to go fast.

If the online casinos had their way, they would want you to go as fast as possible. Why do you think just about every software platform allows players to gamble in auto-mode, not to mention multi-hand casino games. 100+ hands at video poker on a single hand, anyone?

Of course, for the sake of video poker, a greater amount of hands played generally correlates to bringing down the House Edge. Furthermore, being that video poker is played on a machine to begin with, it’s kind of like playing the online video poker. However, for games like Roulette and Craps, the speed of play on the Web is exponentially increased, thereby increasing how many wagers each player makes in a given time frame.

If you’ve ever played Rulette in a land-based casino, you will know that it takes a little time for the ball to spin and settle. In an online casino, you’re looking at just a few seconds.  While some players may certainly enjoy getting in more bets (especially considering that online casinos tend to offer lower bet amounts), it’s important that you get in the habit of pacing yourself and taking it slow.

If you find yourself having trouble slowing down, manually change the playing speed settings in your account. Didn’t know you could do that, did you? Well, like I said, all online casinos would prefer you to play in auto-mode. Again, you would be wise to reconsider playing in auto-mode. It may seem like an efficient way to make bets, but it’s actually more efficient at eating into a bankroll.

Besides, auto-play at an online casino cuts into the entertainment factor. I don’t know about anyone else, but I kind of like taking it slow in a second screen bonus round on the real money slots. In auto-mode, you just whip through each hand, never really getting to fully enjoy yourself in the act of wagering.

So, next time you find yourself going fast in the online casino, or your bankroll seems to be disappearing faster than usual, take a breather and remind yourself to slow down.

Rested Players Make Wiser Betting Decisions

Friday, March 18th, 2011

Sleep-Deprivation-Symptoms-1You know those late-night gambling sessions you sometimes have where you are up way too late, knowing you should be sleeping, but instead are staring at a computer screen and clicking away on the mouse in a zombie-like state? It turns out that at those times, your decision-making ability isn’t at its finest.

Duke University has recently released a study stating what I always thought was obvious: sleep deprivation adversely affects your ability to make wise decisions. In related news, a Yale study has concluded that consumption of large quantities of alcohol can lower inhibitions and cause you to do things you will regret later. I think we all know that a tired mind doesn’t function as well as a rested one – that’s why those infomercials are on late at night – but now we have proof from Duke.

Researchers conducted a study on 29 healthy, young adults. Those test subjects were asked to perform tasks involving risky decision-making after a night of restful sleep and after a night of sleep deprivation. Before the tests, they also underwent an MRI. The researchers concluded that sleep-deprived people are affected by an “optimism bias.” The lack of sleep increases production in the brain regions that assess positive outcomes and decreases production in the parts that assess negative outcomes. As a result, the person is likely to make riskier choices in hopes of obtaining the positive outcome, without considering the negative outcome.

Michael Chee, lead author of the study, said that “sleep-deprived persons narrow down their choices towards those that seem to promise bigger gains, and likely ignore better choices that improve one’s overall probability of winning at least something.” The neuroscientists believe that the decision-making behavior is affected by changes in dopamine level after sleep deprivation.

This study is easily applicable to online gambling. Playing casino games is all about an assessment of risk versus reward. You wager money, knowing that you risk losing it, because you think the potential reward of winning is better. Likewise, the amount you wager is also part of that same assessment. You risk more when you bet more, but you also stand to win more.

If you gamble while deprived of sleep, you are more likely to make risky bets, such as doubling your wager, in the hopes of making big money. Or you are more likely to decide to bet the maximum amount on a progressive slot, hoping to hit the jackpot. You might also be more likely to exceed your budget and keep gambling, thinking that surely you will win more money soon.

As a gambler, if you are deprived of sleep, you are more likely to make decisions based on the prospect of winning money, rather than on the risk of losing money. Wise gambling decisions take both into account in equal portions.

The lesson we can take out of this is that you should not stay up all night gambling. You should also probably not gamble if you didn’t get much sleep the night before. Wise money management is the key to successful gambling and safe gambling and you can’t be wise with your money if your decisions are clouded by a lack of sleep.
