UK Online Casino, Virgin Games, to Offer More

Saturday, June 2nd, 2012

Two leading internet gambling brands – Playtech and Virgin Games – have sealed a deal in which Virgin will license Playtech’s online casino platform.

Long powered by Wager Works software (now an IGT Interactive company), Virgin has been steadily expanding it’s suite of casino games integrated into their custom open betting platform. Through licensing agreements with a multitude of software platforms, including Cryptologic, Ash Gaming, Freemantle and Virtue Fusion, Virgin has done an outstanding job offering their players a wide variety of games.

Coming soon are games from Playtech. This is actually a big deal, as Playtech is one of the oldest internet gaming companies in the business. Not only that, their games are top notch. Exceptional graphics, entertaining slots and giant progressive jackpots is what players will get from Playtech. The diversity in slot machines will especially give Virgin Casino players a well of entertainment.

This is precisely what Virgin Games CEO, Simon Burridge, said is the companies main goal, “…to provide our customers with the widest range of top-tier entertainment through online casino games.” He went on to stress how crucial it is for Virgin to offer a large range of games from the “best-of-breed” gaming software’s.

Well, it certainly appears that way. Virgin now boasts one of the largest span of online casino games in the UK. With nearly 400 casino games offered under one roof, it’s also one of the largest portfolios, period. If you’re reading this, are from the UK (or Europe for that matter), and are looking for a UK online casino to open an account with, you can’t go wrong with Virgin Casino. A big brand (yes, it’s Richard Branson’s Virgin) with the best credentials (Alderney and Malta), Virgin also comes through with a steady promotions and bonus lineup.

Blackjack Bonuses

The top online blackjack sites, like those listed immediately above, are always keen to give away free bonuses that can be used to play blackjack for money. As with all free casino bonuses, the only catch is that you will have to make a real money deposit and are bound to certain wagering conditions before any money earned from the bonus can be withdrawn. If you are no stranger to casino bonuses, this shouldn’t sound unfamiliar. For everyone else, please listen closely, as it’s important to always read the fine print before claiming any bonus.

Essentially, there are two types of bonuses – No-deposit bonuses and Play Bonuses. As their name implies, no-deposit bonuses, aka free chips, do not require a deposit in order to receive the bonus. However, a deposit is required in order to cash out winnings directly derived from wagering with the bonus. Furthermore, no-deposit bonus winnings are always capped, no matter the amount won before the play-through requirement is met. In other words, if you happen to hit a $5,000 jackpot on a free $50 chip (i.e. you have not yet fulfilled the play-through requirement), your cashable winnings will not exceed the conditional limit, which generally never exceeds a few hundred dollars. This is why many online gamblers opt not to use no-deposit chips. Typically, a no-deposit bonus is worth $25 or less, rarely exceeding $50.

Play bonuses, on the other hand, often are worth in the thousands of dollars without any cashable winning limits. As always, it’s important to read the full bonus terms and conditions, which in addition to cashable limitations, may also include time restraints on meeting the play-through, also known as the wager requirement. The best blackjack bonuses typically have a play-through around 50x the combined amount of the player’s deposit and accompanying bonus.

For example, if a player deposits $100 and receives a $100 match bonus with a 50x play-through, the player will be required to make a minimum of $10,000 in Blackjack wagers before any winnings (minus the original bonus amount) can be cashed out; Hence, why these are called “Play” bonuses. The bonus money can be played to earn winnings, however, the bonus money itself cannot be cashed out. In the above example, if the player made it through $10,000 in wagers, and had a remaining balance of $800, the eligible withdrawal amount would be $700 (subtracting the original $100 bonus). Please note that game bonuses always have restrictions on certain games. For example, do not confuse a slots bonus with a blackjack bonus. If a player makes any wager on blackjack while using a slots bonus, the bonus money and any winnings are certain to become null and void. Blackjack bonuses typically also allow wagers on video poker and other table games. If there is any doubt about what games are covered, contact the casino’s customer support center and get it in writing.

While making $10,000 in wagers on a $200 bankroll might sound like a daunting task, when it’s online blackjack for money we’re talking about, it’s actually not that daunting at all. Of course, making full use of the Basic Blackjack Strategy is the best way to ensure the lowest Casinos Edge possible, and thus, getting one’s bankroll through the ups and downs. To this end, it is highly advised to use a Blackjack Strategy Card like the one further below.

Blackjack Strategy

The Basic Black Jack strategy essentially amounts to memorizing nearly 300 possible card combinations of the dealer’s up card and player’s total hand value. This is precisely what is charted on a blackjack strategy card.

By using the Basic Blackjack Strategy card below, you will be playing with the best odds possible. While there are slight variations in House Edge, depending on factors like the number of card decks used, payout and game rules, the Basic Strategy Chart ensures you will be playing to keep the House Edge as low as possible at a game of Blackjack.

Remember, it’s important to use mathematical strategy 100% of the time. Although hunches can sometimes result in lucky bets, your overall odds are the best when incorporating 100% mathematically correct strategy 100% of the time. With perfect strategy playing common online blackjack rules, the Casinos Edge is a variably low .0.4 – 0.6%.

blackjack-strategy-bodogSummarizing the chart to the right, the Basic Blackjack Strategy for common online blackjack rules (4 or more decks are played, Surrendering is not allowed, Doubling Down after Splitting is permitted and the Dealer must Hit on Soft 17) is as follows:

Splitting Hands:

Split 8’s and Aces no matter what;
Do not Split 5’s and 10’s;
Split 2’s & 3’s when Dealer card is a 4-7;
Split 4’s when Dealer card is 5 or 6;
Split 6’s when Dealer card is 3-6;
Split 7’s when Dealer card is 2-7;
Split 9’s when Dealer card is 2-6 or 8-9;

Doubling Down Hands:

Double Hard 9’s when Dealer card is 3-6;
Double Hard 10’s when Dealer card is 2-9;
Double Hard 11’s when Dealer card is 2-A;
Double Soft 13’s & 14’s when Dealer card is 5-6;
Double Soft 15’s & 16’s when Dealer card is 4-6;
Double Soft 17’s & 18’s when Dealer card is 3-6;
Double Soft 18 when Dealer card is 2-6;
Double Soft 19 when Dealer card is 6;

Hitting & Standing Hands:

Hit Hard 11’s or less, no matter Dealer card;
Stand on Hard 12’s when Dealer card is 4-6; Hit all other Dealer cards;
Stand on Hard 13-16 when Dealer card is 2-6; Hit all other Dealer cards;
Stand Hard 17 or more, no matter Dealer card;
Hit Soft 17 or less, no matter Dealer card;
Hit Soft 18’s when Dealer card is 9-A; Stand all other Dealer cards;
Stand Soft 19’s or more no matter value of Dealer card;

Blackjack Games

There are multiple versions of online blackjack for real money, with slight rule variations between each. The most common versions found at top online blackjack sites are as follows:

Classic Blackjack – In Classic Blackjack, 6 decks of cards, which are reshuffled after every hand, is the most common version found on the internet. The Dealer Hits on Soft 17 (raising the Edge), Re-splitting up to three times and Doubling Down on any two cards (one additional hit) is allowed, and there is no re-splitting of Aces, which receive only 1 additional card. Some versions allow Surrendering on any first two cards.

European Blackjack – Very similar to Classic Blackjack, the European version differs in that the Dealer Must Stand on Soft 17 (lowering the Edge), Doubling Down is only permitted only on hard hand totals of 9-11 (Raising the Edge), and there is no surrendering.

Pontoon – The primary rule difference between Pontoon and Classic Blackjack is that for Pontoon, the Dealer hand is dealt entirely face-down. Furthermore, a players wager loses on a Tie with the dealer, the Player cannot Stand on a hand of 14 or less, and re-splitting is allowed only up to two times (rather than three). However, Players can Hit after doubling down (which lowers the House Edge and is not permitted at Classic Blackjack) and receive an Edge Lowering 2:1 payout with winning hands that accumulate five cards total – called a “5 Card Trick”.

Spanish 21 Blackjack – The most notable rule variation for Spanish 21 is that there are no ten’s in the deck (aside for Face cards which count as 10) and that the Player will always win on 21 (no Push). Other rules that help to lower the House Edge are the allowance of Late Surrender, Doubling Down is allowed after Hitting and on Split Aces, with re-splitting allowed for up to four hands, including Aces. Spanish 21 also provides bonus payouts on Natural Blackjack hands (6-7-8 suited, 6-7-8 mixed suit, 6-7-8 of Spades, 7-7-7 suited, 7-7-7 mixed suit and 7-7-7 of Spades). Spanish 21 also offers a side wager called “Match the Dealer” in which the bet wins when the Player hand outranks the dealer’s by match and suit.

Perfect Pairs – Played with Classic BJ rules, Perfect Pairs offers an additional side bet and an extra payout on Pairs (mixed, colored and Perfect).

Double Exposure – Rules of Double Exposure may vary from casino to casino, but in general, differ from Classic Blackjack in that there are no Pushes in Double Exposure (player hand loses) except when holding a Natural Blackjack, and that only one Split per hand is allowed (depending if doubling down is also permitted after Splitting).

Blackjack Switch – Since having the ability to switch cards is obviously in the player’s favor, the House retains some of its edge by altering select rules, including a 1:1 payout on Natural Blackjacks (not 3:2), and allowing a dealer hand of 22 to tie a player hand of 21 (other than Natural Blackjacks).

Atlantic City – If you’re playing Atlantic City Blackjack, better get used to a 2:1 payout on a Blackjack hand. However, to make up for the increase in House Edge, Atlantic City Blackjack goes by the following rules: The Dealer must stand on all hands of 17-21, Late Surrendering is allowed, doubling down is allowed on any two cards, including those of a Split hand. Aces may be split once, while all other cards may be split twice. Due to the difference in rules from Classic Blackjack, players are advised to use a basic strategy card specific to Atlantic City Blackjack.

Vegas Downtown – A splitting image of Classic Blackjack, the rules of Vegas Downtown only vary in that all hands can be doubled down, including split hands. Basic Strategy can be applied directly to games of Vegas Downtown Blackjack.

Vegas Strip – Also quite similar to Classic Blackjack, Vegas Strip rules may vary from casino to casino, but typically involve the use of four decks of cards as opposed to six. Variations in Vegas Strip Blackjack include requiring the dealer to stand on 17’s, while some casinos will doubling down on split Aces.

Triple 7’s – Triple 7’s is a popular form of Blackjack, and can often be found on video blackjack machines in land-based casinos. At online casinos offering Triple 7’s Blackjack, 5 decks are used, and a mandatory progressive side bet must be made on each hand. Other rule variations pertain to splitting and doubling down, with the latter only permitted on hand values of 9-11, followed by a single dealt card. Splitting is only permitted on hands with identical cards and does apply to value. Therefore, a hand consisting of a 10 and Queen cannot be split. Regarding the progressive jackpot bonus, it takes a hand of three 7 of Diamonds. Three 7’s of the same suit (other than Diamonds) pay 1,000 credits, two 7’s of the same suit pay 50 credits, two 7’s of different suits pay 25 credits and a lone 7 pays 5 credits.

Blackjack Odds – As mentioned, contingent on rule variations (as seen above), the Casinos Edge will vary when you play blackjack online for money. To help you gauge what rule variations make the most impact on the Casinos Edge, pay attention to the following:

Number of Decks Used: The less decks, the lower the Edge. The difference between 1 deck and 8 decks is .53%.

Hitting on Soft 17:  When the Dealer is allowed to Stand on a Soft 17, the House Edge comes down 0.2%.

Doubling after Splitting: When doubling after splitting is allowed, the House Edge comes down by .14%.

Doubling on any Two Cards: This keeps the House Edge down by .17%, as opposed to only allowing doubling down on just 9-11.

Resplitting: Resplitting 4 hands as opposed to 2 hands lowers the House Edge by 0.1%

Resplitting Aces: Allowing Aces to be Resplit lowers the Edge by 0.06%

Hitting Split Aces: Allowing Split Aces to be Hit lowers the Casinos Edge by 0.17%

Surrendering:  Allowing late surrender lowers the House Edge by 0.08%.

Blackjack Payout: The biggest game changer of all, getting a 6 to 5 payout on Blackjack as opposed to a 3 to 2, raises the House Edge by 1.357%.

Learning to Love Slot Machines all Over Again

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

I have a confession to make. I have a love-hate relationship with slot machines. There, I said it. By God, I may never be forgiven by the slots fanatics out there, but at least I got it off my chest!

Granted, I don’t know if it’s just me, or if anybody else out there has this problem, but the thing is, I used to love playing slots all the time! Now, whether I’m playing slot machines on the computer, in Las Vegas or on an overpriced cruise ship, I find myself loving and cursing the slot machines in a single breath. If you’re wondering how on earth this is possible, welcome to the club.

Sure, there’s those freakishly inhuman people who never seem to get upset no matter how much money they lose on the slots. I’m not one of them. I’m just a Jedi in training. I can only aspire for the day in which the force will be with me, and I too will be able to lose $500 on the Monopoly slots and look that machine in the eye….err, coin slot, and say, “Nice doing business with you. Thanks for the good times”.

No, I’m thinking most people are probably wondering how it’s even possible to curse and love something on a single breath to begin with. Let’s just say that’s how long it takes for a slot machine to take your money. If you’re one of those deep breathing Yogi’s, you could probably get in ten spins (and lose twenty bucks) on a single breath!

But seriously folks, that’s part of the problem. Looking back on my relationship with slots, I can see that during the times in which I went on auto-pilot and wasn’t taking my time and wasn’t reminding myself to have fun and that I was losing money I could afford to lose, that’s when the love would turn to hate and I would start shouting out expletive’s at the slot machine (as if it could hear me), and all to the chagrin of the poor little old lady sitting behind me. Actually, she turned out to be more of a sailor than me, but that’s another story.

Needless to say, I’m a happy man when the machine is spitting out coins. My challenge is to learn how to be happy when it’s not.

That said, I suppose the moral of this story (and the whole point of this diatribe) is that if you too find yourself loving and hating the slot machines in a single breath, remind yourself to take it slow and have fun. Take in your surroundings, stop to sip on a drink and watch those around you. If you’re playing at online casinos, remember to take more frequent breaks. You could check your email, update your Facebook account or catch up on some news.

The point is to prevent yourself from getting into what I like to call the zombie zone and forget that you are playing slots to have fun. If you can win some money while your at it, then consider yourself lucky.

IGT Renews Agreement With Hasbro

Saturday, January 21st, 2012

If there is any doubt about online gambling coming to the United State, one need only take a look at the recent partnership renewal between two iconic American companies: Hasbro Incorporated and International Gaming Technology (IGT). On first glance, one might be wondering what on earth a toy manufacturer has anything to do with a casino gaming and slot machine manufacturer. But then again, perhaps that’s what makes the partnership all the more American.

The fact of the matter is that IGT and Hasbro have been “doing business” for quite some time. Ever played the Monopoly slot machine at a Vegas casino before? How about Cluedo? Well, these games (among many others) are the fruition of a licensing agreement between Hasbro and IGT – the former of which owns several popular board game brands.

Reaching beyond the brick ‘n mortar casino industry of late, IGT has developed several of Hasbro’s brands into online slot machines, including Dungeons and Dragons, Battleship, Transformers and the aforementioned, highly popular, Cluedo and Monopoly. In the Spring of 2012, IGT will be launching “Monopoly Plus”, which will showcase new gaming innovations and is expected to be a big hit.

While Monopoly Plus may not be available for U.S. citizens to wager at real money online casinos just yet, it’s pretty clear that IGT is ready and willing. The recent renewal of IGT’s licensing agreement with Hasbro gives the slot machine manufacture rights to produce new game titles, and distribute games to legalized online gambling markets through 2014. Before then, there is a good chance that the U.S. will become one of these markets – and IGT is certainly planning on it.

New Online Bingo Software Announced

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

BingoTwo of the top online casino software developers in the industry have announced new bingo software. Both Microgaming and Rival Gaming announced new bingo games that will be available at select casinos soon. The new games will offer unique spins on the traditional game of bingo.

Microgaming has bingo software that it calls Bingo+ Plus. The new bingo software is customizable, so each online casino that carries it can make it their own and differentiate themselves from the other casinos that carry the software. The Bingo+ Plus software was rolled out in June but will be licensed to more online casinos starting in September.

Meanwhile, Rival Gaming has also announced new online bingo software. According to the company, the new instant bingo software will allow players to play bingo with 30, 75, 80 or 90 balls. The different number of balls gives the game a different speed and type of gameplay. 75-ball bingo is most popular in the United States, while 90-ball bingo is more popular in Europe.

In addition to the variations in number of balls, the new online bingo software will have a wide range of payout tables, will feature either automatic or manual daubing (marking of your cards) and adjustable speeds. Players will be able to play up to 100 cards at once. To keep track of all of those cards, the software features automatic card ordering that moves the cards that have the best odds or the most wins at the top of the set of cards.

Though bingo used to be a game associated with the elderly, it is quickly becoming popular with the young gamblers. With the help of new software from Rival Gaming and Microgaming, it should continue to grow and become one of the most popular online casino games.

Freaky Cowboys Slot at Bodog Casino

Monday, August 29th, 2011

freaky_cowboys1Bodog Casino has a new entry in the Freaky series of slots. This time, it is set in the Old West. The new online slot is called Freaky Cowboys and it is available now at Bodog.

The titular cowboys in Freaky Cowboys actually are freaky. I’m not sure what they are, but they seem to be aliens or monsters or something. They are cartoons, though, so they’re kind of like aliens or monsters made by Pixar. Freaky Cowboys is a 5-reel online slot that lets you play up to 30 paylines. The slot has a 20,000 coin jackpot when you bet the maximum amount on the maximum lines.

The online slot features symbols of four different freaky cowboys, a cowboy hat, boots, lasso, gun, money bag and sheriff’s star. Each freaky cowboy becomes animated when used in a winning combination. They do things like shake a money bag or twirl a pistol, which then accidentally goes off, shooting a buzzard flying through the sky.

There are several bonuses available in the slot game. The bank bonus symbol unlocks a second-screen game where you try to stop bandits from robbing a bank. There are 15 bandits trying o rob a bank and you shoot as many of them as you can. Players can also win multiplier bonuses and free spins. During free spins, winnings are multiplied by five or ten times.

To play the newest online slot on the site, visit Bodog Casino. This online casino game and more can be found online. The game is available as a free trial. If you are not a Bodog member, you can take advantage of the $200 welcome bonus as well.

New Slots at Virgin Casino

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

lacucaracha-bonusToday, Wednesday, August 24, three new online slots debut at Virgin Casino. They’re not exactly new to the industry, but are new to the casino. Each is based on a region of the globe, as the online casino offers a virtual tour of places you may or may not want to visit on your vacation.

The first new game is Bangkok Nights, which is based on the nightlife scene in the Thailand capital. The game is a 5-reel, 25-line video slot with bonuses that give you wins up to 100 times your wager. The game has symbols of clubs, parades and other things to play up the party atmosphere.

Cherry Blossoms is another new online slot. This game is set in ancient Japan and features symbols of Japanese architecture, fans, geishas and more. It is a 5-reel slot with 25 paylines. The maximum jackpot for the game is 12,500 coins.

The other brand new slot is La Cucaracha. That is a slot based in Mexico. “La Cucaracha” means “the cockroach” in Spanish and is a well known, though clichéd, Mexican song.  The game features a Mexican roach who knows how to drink tequila and party. It is a 25-payline game with a 5,000 coin jackpot.

Though those are the only brand new games at Virgin Casino, the casino is still highlighting almost-new games such as the Chinese-themed Dynasty and the Roman-themed Call of the Colosseum. Both games were reviewed recently by They are also featuring an online slot called Chests of Plenty. Before you get too excited, they are talking about treasure chests.

All of these games and more can be found at Virgin Casino. Stop by the casino if you want to check them out.

One Online Slots Gets its Own Site

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011

It is not every day that you hear of an online slots game so popular that a company creates a site just for it. For those of you familiar with Microgaming’s Mega Moolah, that is just the case.

Mega Moolah is a progressive online slots game created by Microgaming that as resulted in three variations over the last few years. In total it has paid out close to $30 million since it was created. The call to fame for this progressive is that its jackpot’s minimum is 1,000,000 credits, which is what it resets to once it is won. But the average win is $2,379,806.

Now Mega Moola UK (notice the ‘h’ is missing from the company name to give it some difference between it and the Microgaming online slots game) has created a site that is only for Mega Moolah. The variation they offer right now is only the African safari themed variation, but it is still Mega Moolah and it still has that impressive jackpot. Clark Gamble, media representative for Mega Moola UK, said they wanted to give players “a one-of-a-kind user experience and produce a site that was as close to the game as they could in term so animation, sounds and graphics.”

The site itself is not just limited to a flash version of the online slots game, it also offer players other features via animal buttons. There is Giraffe who gives details of the game to players. For those wanting to download the software there is an Antelope to click, and for those who would rather play via their mobile device, they can click on the Elephant. The Monkey will give visitors a list of the top four largest wins.

Since it is its own site, Mega Moola UK has also given its Mega Moolah site a couple of welcome bonuses. Players can claim a 100% bonus worth up to £200, and then with their second deposit players can claim another 100% bonus worth up to £300.

We here at have never seen an online slots game, or any online casino game for that matter, have a site created solely for itself. Sure there are online poker sites, but they offer several varieties of poker. This is not a site dedicated to just online slots, but only one online slots game: Mega Moolah.

Future of Online Gambling Games—the Live Dealer Trend

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

The Internet is a fast paced place to be. Innovation is the name of the game and new things are constantly coming out. What this means for those who keep their interests in the Internet is to keep up with its fast pace. And online gambling is no different.

Already in the last couple of years we have seen some advances in gaming technology, especially when it comes to the online slots games that software providers create for their partner online casinos. We have seen the launch of new types of bonus games, the iSlots from Rival Gaming, the rich graphics of 3D online slots, multi player online slots which pit thirty players against each other to see who will claim the most from the bonus game, and finally there have been the real 3D online slots, the ones who do need the special 3D glasses to bring the graphics out of the screen.

But that is only online slots. What about the rest of the online casino games out there? Oh do not worry, they have had their own innovation of late: live dealer games. The most prominent are online poker and online blackjack, two of the most popular card games in both land casinos and online casinos. Although online baccarat is on its way up the ladder too as it has become a high roller favorite of late.

For online poker and online blackjack, live dealer games are the closest thing to playing in a land casino. A real dealer, usually an attractive woman, is present in front of the camera to deal the cards and smile. Players can actually see the whole table, see how the cards are dealt and still get to play from the comfort of their own homes. More and more online casinos are working to implement live dealer games to draw in more players to catch up with the online casinos who have already begun live dealer games. And those who already offer live dealer card games are working to expand their offerings. Some are adding more live dealer games, such as live roulette. Others are expanding their live dealer games to their sister online casinos; recently Bodog Asia announced that they are setting up a studio to offer live dealer online poker.

It is clear that if an online casino is going to keep up with the rest of the online gambling industry, they will have to get on board with the live dealer games. Players love these games since it offers them the closest thing to playing in a land casino without having to leave home.

Microgaming’s New Spingo Casino Game

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

microgamingEvery month, the big name casino software developers launch new games. The idea is to constantly supply players with new games because, after a while, people tend to get sick of playing the same games over and over. Sometimes the new games are nothing more than a standard online slot with a different theme. Other times, it’s a totally new game, as is the case with the new offering from Microgaming.

The new game is called Spingo and it is a new type of online table game. The game, which can be streamed online with Flash software, is based on a bingo type of draw machine. It is kind of like a combination of bingo and roulette. Numbered balls are dropped onto a spinning wheel, similar to a roulette wheel. The players have a number of roulette-style bets that they can make. They can bet on individual numbers, a combination of numbers, or on the color. The more you bet on, the more your wager has to be.

In addition to Spingo, the new roulette-bingo hybrid table game, Microgaming is also releasing a number of other new games. The others are online slots, such as Multi-Player No Worries, Multi-Player Isis, and Triangulation.

These new games can be found at online casinos that carry the Microgaming suite of games, including 32Red, All Slots Casino, Roxy Palace and Go Wild Casino. Microgaming is one of the first and most respected software developers in the gambling industry. They are located in the Isle of Man and were established in 1994.
