Care for Some Poker During your Layover?

1 February 2011 by admin

That sounds like I am talking about a casino in an airport does it not? Silly idea you might think, but you would be a tad wrong there. Out in Delano, California an airport casino will be opening today, February 1st. It makes me wonder if I could wager on whether or not my flight would be on time…

The new casino is located in a space that was previously a night club. Maybe this is just me but I did not know that airports could have things like night clubs and casinos, but then I am going to assume that California just does things differently. Either way, the space was originally occupied by Aldo’s Nightclub, which had a gaming license that allowed for up to twenty five table games; slot machines were not a part of the gaming license. The proud new owners of the casino, which they are calling the Aviator Casino, are Alan Adler and his wife Lee Ann; Adler is an oilman who is also a pilot and fan of poker. Now all he has to do is fly his plane in and pull up a seat at a poker table.

In order for the Adler’s to open the Aviator Casino they had to buy the gaming license from Aldo’s, which was obviously successful. And while the license will allow up to twenty five table games, the Adlers only intend to operate eighteen upon opening, including tables for blackjack, Pai Gow and poker. There is always room for expansion though.

The city of Delano is welcoming of the Aviator Casino not only because it will provide 130 mostly full time jobs—which the Adlers have said they will hire as many Delano residents as possible—but it will also bring in some new revenue for the city. Every quarter the Adlers must pay the city of Delano $500 per gaming table. The must also pay a monthly fee on the revenues generated. If revenues are less than $210,000 in a month, the fee could be a minimum of 7.5%. But if revenue climbs to more than $1 million per month, the Adlers may wind up paying the maximum percentage of 15.5%.

As for competition there are two casinos new the Delano Municipal Airport and therefore near the Aviator Casino. They are the Eagle Mountain in Porterville, and the Golden West Casino in Bakersfield, which is where the Adlers are from. Of the two casinos, only the Golden West presents direct competition. This is because Eagle Mountain offers slot machines, while the Golden West is like the Aviator Casino—both are only allowed to operate table games.

Now if only they would let me wager on whether or not my flight will be on time. If patrons could wager on that at the Aviator Casino it would have its own little unique notch in the casino world.
