If you've ever wanted a shot at the poker big leagues, then
you may want to consider attending the World Series of Poker
Academy. Personally, I didn't even know there was a WSOP
Academy. And not that I don't think it's a great idea (Phil
Hellmuth Jr. has been successfully running his own school
for some time now), it's just that the Academy is a
"traveling" school that moves from city to city. So, if you
don't happen to reside in or live near one of its tour
cities, then there's probably a good chance you haven't
heard of it either.
That doesn't mean you can't take a quasi vacation road
trip, to say - Los Angeles - and attend the WSOP Academy's
next training session. That's right - taking place September
6-7 at the Bicycle Casino in La La Land (a place well known
for it's serious poker action), this event will mark the
first time the WSOP Academy has set up shop in Los Angeles.
Two other "firsts" will be the addition of two new poker
instructors. And when I say "instructor", I mean
professional instructors. None other than Kenny Tran and
Annie Duke will be joining the WSOP Academy's already
impressive roster of instructors.
The two-day seminar covers everything from pot odds
calculation and aggressive play to strategies, player
position and tells (taught by none other than former FBI
agent and poker player, Joe Navarro). They aren't going to
teach you the standard poker hands, so if you don't know a
lick about poker, you definitely want to learn the basics
and then some before attending this class. Furthermore, the
cost is no small chunk of change. $1,500 will get you in the
door, which also includes a seat to a tournament after the
first day of classes. The winner will not only win some
extra prizes, but will also get a seat to a WSOP circuit
event of their choice.
In my opinion, if you have the money to spare, are
serious about competing in the WSOP and can manage a trip to
Los Angeles, this is a two-day class worth your time and
money. There are only 99 spots available, which guarantees
some one-on-one training and attention, which from the likes
of Tran and Duke, is nothing to scoff at. Put it this way -
one of the Academy's grad's recently made it to the final
table at the WSOP championship, just days after graduating a
summer seminar. That should say something.
