Blog Entry
of the Month:
So, here's some fodder for you. With every new political
appointment in the U.S. comes the question, "Could this
be favorable for online gambling?". Okay, maybe not
every appointment (God knows the head of Waste
Management is going to have a say in gambling related
matters). But when it comes down to a U.S. Supreme Court
Justice, this question definitely begs some thought. If
you hadn't heard already, President Obama has nominated
U.S. Court of Appeals Judge, Sonia Sotomayor, to the
high court office. A historical nomination to say the
least (If approved by judiciary committee, Sotomayor
will be the second woman supreme court justice and the
first Mexican one at that), everybody is now scrambling
to examine Judge Sotomayor's past ruling record in order
to form an opinion as to how she might vote on
imperative matters in the future. In regards to online
gambling - a matter that could very well go before the
U.S. Supreme Court - there is not much to go on except
that Judge Sotomayor ruled in favor of the National
Football League (a longtime opponent of online
gambling...for obvious reasons) over a matter that had
to do with age requirements to join the NFL. I've also
read some views that since Sotomayor was an intellectual
rights attorney, she might consider football game
results as being intangible assets of the NFL. Maybe.
Maybe not. The bottom line is that most people will
agree that Judge Sotomayor is a pragmatic judge who
votes based on the "big picture". The American Bar
Association has labeled Judge Sotomayor as a centrist,
politically speaking - and that is enough for most
people in support of online gambling regulation in the
U.S. It is for me. I mean, come on - how are you going
to appoint a Supreme Court Judge who has already
essentially voiced how they would rule on a matter -
based on ideological beliefs. When the case actually
came before them, they wouldn't be "judging" would they?
Having someone in that seat, no matter their race or
sex, who is going to make their decision based on the
facts of the matter at hand and in relation to current
times, is the best person for the job. |
