of the Month: It's
funny to hear French authorities complaining about and
criticizing online sports betting sites, considering their
own state of gambling affairs. Although France has made
some recent progress in working with the EU to update
their monopolistic gambling practices and allow cross
border online gambling services to cater to French
citizens, they still have a long way to go in being fully
liberalized like that in the UK. France's most recent
tirade, (short of arresting any high profile online
gambling CEO's), are claims by the Agence France Presse (AFP)
that 15,000 illegal sports betting sites, most of which
are being controlled by criminal groups, are now
populating the internet and trafficking some €15 billion
per year. The AFP further compared these figures with a
quote by the International Olympic Committee President,
Jacques Rogge, who compared online gambling with the
gangrene caused by sports doping. A perfect analogy if you
ask me (note the sarcasm). It's kind of like comparing the
French Lottery with global warming. |
