European Online Gambling Industry in Need of
International Regulatory Standards
Everybody knows that "certain"
European Union member countries are not being compliant
with eCommerce laws. Or should I say, non-compliant with
eCommerce online betting operations. On one hand, I'm
fully in favor of making threats against member State's
who blatantly refuse to allow outside operators from
taking business all in the name of protectionism. On the
other hand, I believe that as long as there is no
universal standard - or at least a semblance of a
universal standard - that says how online gambling
should be regulated, I can't blame the defiant few who
continue to take online bets within their own borders,
but refuse other operators to do the same - all in the
name of preventing problem gambling. Basically, if there
is no EU treaty that specifically applies all this talk
about eCommerce non-compliance to online betting, there
is really nothing the EU can do to enforce compliance. A
recent report titled "Market Barriers: A European Online
Gambling Study 2009" attests that 19 of the 27 European
Union member nations are currently holding debates on
the matter of setting up National licensing regimes,
which would only serve to foster more protectionism.
Contrary to the liberalization in the UK, Malta and most
recently in Italy, the overall European online gambling
industry is sorely lacking of an international
regulatory regime.
