March 31, 2009 - Although it's
like comparing apples and oranges in terms of business
amount, perhaps land-based casino operators in the U.S. have
a thing or two to learn from operators in the Czech
Republic. If you didn't hear already, well then, listen up -
I'm going to tell you something. Wait for it...Wait for
it....Wait for it...It's going to be anti-climactic no
matter what.
Anyhow, the Finance Ministry of the Czech Republic
has decided it wants to regulate online gambling. Don't
ask me how or why - all I know is that online gambling
will officially be "legal" in the Czech Republic when
all is said and done. Now, here is where things get most
interesting. Just like in the U.S., where citizens
continue to gamble strong at offshore online casinos, it
isn't news that Czech citizens also like to get in their
fair share of wager on the Web.
Wager on the Web...Ohhh, give me a spanking...I like
the sound of it...WagerontheWeb.com (I should check to
see if it's taken).....As sure as lightning it's taken!
But ahaaaa! WagersontheWeb.com is not taken (that's the
plural version for all you smarty pants out there). But
you know what? I don't want it. Take it if you still
can! WagersontheWeb.com - It's ready to make a million
bucks!
Anyways, before I continue losing my mind....wait a
second...stop right there. I am using this moment to
officially declare that I am not losing my mind and that
I'm going to stop putting myself down. Who cares if I
actually am losing my mind. I'm a good person, I'm
beautiful and somebody loves me damnit! (I just don't
know who that is yet).
That said, back to legalized gambling in the Czech
Republic (and yet I still wonder why I failed Creative
Writing class). So yes, the land-based casino chains in
the U.S. need to take a lesson from what's going down in
the Czech Republic. Apparently, the Czech's leading
betting shop operator, TipSport, is embracing online
gambling regulation despite a loss in business from its
land-based operations.
The difference between TipSport and say, Harrah's, is
that TipSport sees great potential in online gambling,
not to mention the fruitless battles of trying to keep
it down. As TipSport spokesperson, Lubomir Jezek, said,
although business at land-based branches may be down,
online gambling does not appear to be letting up anytime
soon. In other words, TipSport is going to use their
resources to gain the business they lost to other online
gambling operators in the first place.
