| Blog Entry
of the Month:
You are not going to believe what I just saw. Or maybe
you saw it too? I was just checking my mail on Yahoo!
(my God, did I actually just insert the exclamation
point after Yahoo...what have I become!). Anyways (yes,
it's going to be "one of those" blog entries
again), I was checking my email - and you know the
horizontal banner ad that rotates out at the very top of
the page? - well, I happened to catch a glimpse of it,
which is funny because I usually never look at those
annoying ads unless something catches my peripheral
vision (usually a woman's body part in one of those
"Pure" ads). But this time around, it just happened to
be an ad about gambling, so naturally, my sixth sense
caught wind of it. If I can recall correctly, I believe
the ad was all black with a red circle and a slash going
through it - you know, like the Ghost Busters? But
instead of a picture of good 'ol Casper, the red line
was slashing through the words "Online Gambling". The
rest of the banner goes on to say something along the
lines of "Did you know that online gambling is illegal
in the U.S. and anyone who takes money for bets or
places bets with money online could be prosecuted serve
time in jail". First off, what I found most interesting
was the fact that the ad said "could go to jail",
knowing all too well that the UIGEA is a highly flawed
piece of legislation and does not actually propose
enforcement guidelines for sending gamblers to jail.
Secondly - and the most funny thing of all - was that
this banner turned out to be an advertisement for some
land-based casino directory, which used ip address
tracking to recommend nearby brick 'n mortar casinos to
its visitors. And just when I thought the real powers
that are behind the UIGEA couldn't get more
hypocritical.... |
